Canon C70 Corrupting SD Cards/ Footage – Need Help Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,

I’m experiencing an issue with my Canon C70 that’s been frustrating and confusing. It is a fairly unique situation as I doubt there are many people using the C70 for this purpose. I do professional video for a living, but also create music with my loop station and send the audio directly into the c70 via mini XLR and have been filming in RAW LT 29.97. I always stop the recording properly before powering down the camera, but I’ve encountered recurring issues with SD card corruption.

A few weeks ago I had just purchased a 512GB Angelbird card, which is technically not on the c70 compatibility list. I thought I had a bad card or compatibility issues so I went ahead and returned in and took the L on the lost footage.

Today using one of my for sure compatible 128GB Angelbird cards I had the SAME EXACT issue.

Both times this is what happened:

  • removed card from camera and entered card in card reader(I used two different readers so its not the card reader)
  • when i copied and pasted file it failed and said the file was corrupt
  • I returned the card to the camera to see if it was still viewable. Card no longer readable by camera.
  • I return the card to the computer again and now the card has to be formatted and I cant even see the file.

The only thing different about the 2nd time is that I had one other file that I managed to copy and paste from the card, but the file was completely corrupt. The audio is only loud static and the video is black.

I am wondering if the audio load I'm pumping into the c70 is causing corruption or if there is an underlying issue with the canon c70s RAW LT? Or maybe my camera is dying?

Has anyone else experienced similar problems with the C70 and Angelbird cards? Are there any settings or best practices I might be overlooking to prevent corruption? Do I need mandatory dual slot recording to avoid this?

Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

Did you format the card prior to first use. If not start there cards DO NOT come pre-formatted for use. Always format cards IN CAMERA before first use.

Hi Demetrius, I format before ever use. Thanks for the input! I am narrowing it down to maybe RAW LT is buggy? I had other issues with weird banding in the sky that I did not have in any other codec.

I'd love to help, but I'm afraid I'm not going to be much use.  I've been using the C70 for going on 4 years now, and never seen a problem like this.  Then again I mostly don't shoot RAW.

I regularly use a bunch of different SD cards including Angelbird, Lexar and ProGrade.

Oh, and BTW, I ALWAYS initialise my cards IN THE CAMERA before use.

I am wondering if the audio load I'm pumping into the c70 is causing corruption

I really doubt that audio is your issue.  There is no "load", and you're not "pumping" anything, no matter how radical it sounds.  You're simply connecting an audio signal to the XLR input, which I've done many times, and I'm sure many other people have.  I mean, I assume you're not connecting the XLR input to mains voltage, or anything.

I dunno what to suggest, though.  Maybe your camera has a bad SD socket?  Does it happen on both slots?
