Speedlite EL-5 joystick stops working when wireless receiver is on

Hello,

I have EL-5 Speedlite and when I switch Wireless on (receiver), joystick on Speedlite used to change mode for example or to change compensation. Stop working when wireless receiver is on, especially mode and wireless functions assigned to joystick. I have to press in to make changes, pure move down for example (where mode change is ba default) does not work.

Is this a bug, by design thing? I pair it with ST-E1 on R6 Mark II.

Thank you.

Those sections of the manual all describe the sender settings not the receiver settings.

You said you have the ST-E10 on your camera so that is the sender, and your EL-5 off-camera gets its settings from the ST-E10 which is why you can’t change mode on a receiver unit.

When a Speedlite is configured as a receiver then the mode is set from the transmitter that is controlling it, and this has been the case for many years. If you have the ST-E10 on your EOS R6 Mark II you can press the MENU button on the back of the ST-E10 to quickly access the flash settings on the camera screen.

You might find this blog post I wrote last year useful, it is about the two different kinds of flash settings display on the EOS R6 Mark II https://www.p4pictures.com/2023/10/quick-flash-group-control-speedlites/

https://www.p4pictures.com/2023/10/quick-flash-group-control-speedlites/  - this is cool, I will try it out

But I probably got confused because of this: https://cam.start.canon/en/A006/manual/html/UG-04_Radio_Transmission_0040.html and this: https://cam.start.canon/en/A006/manual/html/UG-04_Radio_Transmission_0080.html

as in Sender mode it works, only in Receiver it does not work but as you said it probably is design decision. It is strangely described in web manual.

But still why it would not work, I just can´t find any reason why not.

Thank you.

Aha, well that probably is the reason, because yes in semder mode it can be changed.

Yes I do use ST-E10 on camera so EL-5 get info/commands from it but I was surprised about joystick not working or not doing anything, when I move it down. I can get - yes it is controlled by ST-E10 or when it is mode of receiver it is searching for command from transmitter, but even if it is not connected to anything and just in receiver mode, it stops working or reacting. When I press in on joystick then it works I can change what ever I want.

Thank you.
