Will Yongnuo YN-E3-R3 II trigger Speedlite EL-5?

First off, to anyone's knowledge is the Yongnuo YN-E3-R3 II Transmitter compatible with Canon's Speedlite EL-5?

If it *is* compatible, how do I set up the EL-5 as a wireless receiver in M (manual) power mode?
When I try to set the EL-5 as a wireless receiver, I see a small circle with a slash through it to the upper right of the RECEIVER icon on the Speedlite. That circle with slash *doesn't* appear in diagrams shown in the EL-5 user manual. And M *isn't* a selectable mode when I set the EL-5 as a wireless receiver.

If the YN-E3-R3 II *isn't* compatible, has anyone used an ST-E10 with 600EX II-RT, 430EX III-RT and EL-5 Speedlites?

My EL-5 firmware version is 1.0.1.

I'm using EOS R5 II and EOS R7 cameras.

Thanks.

The compatibility of a third party trigger with Canon Speedlite is the responsibility of the third party manufacturer.

That said, I have an older YN-E3-RT and it has worked ok for me with Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT, 600EX II-RT and 403EX III-RT flashes. I have not tried it with the EL-5. I have also got the Canon ST-E3-RT v2 and ST-E10, and I have used both with the Speedlite EL-5 successfully in conjunction with an EOS R6 Mark II and EOS R10. Using the ST-E3-RT v2 on the EOS R6 also worked.

Looking in the manual for the Speedlite EL-5 the icon you see indicates that you have selected wireless receiver mode on the EL-5, but that it is not connected to the transmitter. You will also see that the LINK led above the display, this will light in green when the link is connected. Your lack of connection might be due to different channel and or ID assignments. You must match the channel and ID in both transmitter (sender) and receiver.

See this page in the manual https://cam.start.canon/en/A006/manual/html/UG-04_Radio_Transmission_0030.html

Since I have a good selection of Canon Speedlite transmitters, and older RT model Speedlites I was successfully able to try a mix 'n match system with EL-5 on the camera as a sender and it would control the older Speedlite 600EX-RT, 600EX II-RT and 430EX III-RT models. With any of the Speedlites and also my Canon Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3-RT v2, and ST-E10 I was able to configure the EL-5 as a receiver and control it with any of the other devices I had.

If you want to use the EL-5 as a remote light in manual power mode, you need to do the following.

  1. Configure a suitable sender unit on the camera
  2. Select wireless receiver mode on the EL-5 and match the channel and ID to the one on the camera
  3. Select a group for the EL-5, by default it will be A, but can be A, B, C, D, E.
  4. From the device on the camera select manual mode and determine the power you want the EL-5 to deliver.

When you take a photo you will see that the EL-5 LCD will update to show manual mode, and the power level you selected. It does not update until you either take a photo or press the TEST button.

Please note the groups D and E can only be used when you set the device acting as the transmitter on the camera to Gr (group) mode. In group mode, you can set each of the five groups individually to manual, or E-TTL or off. The EL-5 will no support Ext.A mode with group, and if the group that the EL-5 is in is set to Ext.A it will not fire.

Thanks for your response. I’ve used both my YN-E3-RT and YN-E3-RT II to trigger multiple 430EX III-RT and 600EX II-RT flashes shooting residential real estate for clients.

After switching the EL-5 to channel 10 (which I had the YN-E3-RT II set to), the YN-E3-RT II connects with and controls the EL-5 just fine.
