Flash recommendations for EOS R50

Good afternoon.

I'm interested in purchasing a Canon R50, but I'm having trouble finding a Flash that will fit.

Is there a flash that does not require the adapter? Godox or Yongnuo?

Thanks.

You could use the Speedlite EL-5 which doesn't require the Multi-Function Shoe Adapter AD-E1.

I read somewhere that the 580ex2 works with the r50 without the unavailable adapter, but that makes no sense since the hotshoe is completely different.

No it won't work because the camera lacks the pins for older EX and 5 pin EL series speedlites to work. Cameras such as the EOS R7 and EOS R6 Mark II have the legacy 5 pins and the new digital connection pins at the front of the hot shoe. This preserving backward compatability with older EX and 5 pin EL series speedlites.

When the hotshoe looks like this the only devices compatible are ones with the 21-pin multifunction shoe fitting.

Such unit currently are…

  • Speedlite EL-10
  • Speedlite EL-5
  • Speedlite Transmitter ST-E10
  • Hotshoe Adapter AD-E1
