Biggs, those are just beautiful. I cant get that close here to them, they arent used to ppl. You can see how close you got on that one, Im so jealous your able to get that close. The one w. the fish is OUTstanding! Guess I need to come visit you. lol The last one looks like he has an injury to the front of his wing.

Getting closer is always better than getting a better lens.  Besides it is free. You need to learn the subjects habits.  These are wild herons not at all tame since herons migrate.  One key is to try and get there when they hunt and feed.  They are less interested in you and more concentrated on fishing.

Move slowly.  All animals notice movement first. And of course keep as silent as you can.  I have had the shutter click scare them away before.  Watch the weather because that effects how they act, too.

 

It is so hot in Kansas right now it would be a waste of time to try and photograph herons anytime except early or late in the day.
