This image shows a Crimson-backed Tanager (Ramphocelus dimidiatus) photographed at Hacienda Guadalajara in La Buitrera, near Palmira in Valle del Cauca, Colombia. The location lies along the western slopes of the Andes, where forest edges, secondary growth, and agricultural land create a rich transitional habitat that supports a wide variety of bird species.

The bird was perched on a weathered stump in soft, filtered light, which allowed the deep crimson plumage to retain texture and tonal variation without harsh highlights. The dark wings and pale blue bill provide contrast and visual structure, while the soft green background keeps the subject clearly separated from the environment. I composed the frame to use the stump as a natural platform, giving the subject a stable visual base while maintaining a clean and uncluttered background.

The photograph was made using a Canon mirrorless camera paired with a long telephoto lens. Working distance was important to avoid disturbing the bird, so the long focal length allowed for tight framing while maintaining natural behavior. A fast shutter speed was used to ensure sharp feather detail, even though the bird was momentarily still. A wide aperture helped isolate the subject from the background, and ISO was increased to compensate for the low light conditions typical of forest edges and understory environments. Autofocus was placed precisely on the eye to maintain sharpness where it matters most in bird portraiture.

One of the main technical challenges in photographing birds with strong red plumage is maintaining detail in the feathers without overexposing the color channels. Careful exposure control ensured that the red tones remained rich while still showing texture and depth. The soft light in this environment helped produce a natural color palette and smooth tonal transitions across the image.

This photograph represents my approach to wildlife photography, which focuses on patience, observation, and technical control in natural environments. Locations like La Buitrera continue to demonstrate how important edge habitats and working landscapes are for maintaining biodiversity, and photographing species like the Crimson-backed Tanager helps tell that story visually.
