Capturing A Male Brown Violetear Hummingbird In Colombia With The Canon R5

In the soft late afternoon light at Hacienda Guadalajara in La Buitrera near Palmira in Colombia's Valle del Cauca region I had one of those perfect field moments every Canon shooter lives for. A male Brown Violetear Colibri delphinae landed on a broad succulent leaf right in front of me. The bird turned into a clean profile and stayed perfectly still while the Andean foothills rose behind it in soft layers of green.

The warm earth-brown plumage blended beautifully with the surrounding foliage but the real magic was in the throat. An iridescent gorget flashed sapphire violet and turquoise as the light caught it from different angles. A matching violet ear patch completed the effect. The leaf itself showed a rich green surface with a glowing red-orange edge that created a strong natural leading line across the frame.

To freeze any tiny movement in the breeze while keeping the background beautifully defocused I chose 1/1500 second at f/6.7 and pushed the ISO to 3200 on my Canon R5. The RF 100-500mm lens gave me the exact reach I needed without disturbing the bird. That combination delivered tack-sharp detail on the eye and every feather while preserving the gentle diffusion of the natural light and turning the forest edge into a creamy bokeh.

As a conservation photographer I rely on the Canon R5's high-ISO performance and the RF 100-500mm's versatility in remote locations like this. The camera let me work quickly and ethically so the hummingbird could continue its role as an important pollinator in these humid evergreen forests and shade-coffee plantations.

Every frame I make with Canon gear reminds me why I travel the world with this system. It is not just about the image. It is about using the best tools to document and protect the places that still hum with life.
