This image shows a Scrub Tanager (Stilpnia vitriolina) photographed at Hacienda Guadalajara in La Buitrera, near Palmira in Valle del Cauca, Colombia. The location sits along the western slopes of the Andes, where dense vegetation and transitional habitats provide both complexity and opportunity for photographing birds in natural conditions.

The bird is captured in a feeding moment, holding a small fruit while partially framed by broad green leaves. Its soft gray body is complemented by a warm-toned crown and subtle blue wing patch, details that become more apparent under even, diffused light. The surrounding foliage creates a layered composition that adds depth and context, while the background falls away into a smooth green field that keeps the subject clearly defined.

The photograph was made using a Canon mirrorless camera paired with a long telephoto lens to maintain distance and avoid disturbing the bird. A wide aperture was used to isolate the subject within a visually complex environment, while still retaining enough foreground detail to suggest habitat. A fast shutter speed ensured sharpness during brief moments of stillness, and ISO was adjusted to compensate for limited light under the forest canopy. Autofocus was placed precisely on the eye, which is critical for maintaining visual impact in bird portraiture.

One of the technical challenges in this scene was managing the density of the foliage. Instead of removing or avoiding it, I used the leaves to frame the subject and create depth. Exposure was carefully balanced to preserve color accuracy and avoid losing detail in either the highlights or shadows. The result is a photograph that reflects both the subject and its environment in a natural and controlled way.

This image represents my approach to wildlife photography, which emphasizes patience, observation, and technical precision in complex environments. Locations like La Buitrera demonstrate how biodiversity can persist in landscapes where forest and human activity intersect, and documenting these moments helps illustrate the importance of preserving these habitats.
