When I push the scan button on my scanner, how do I get it to print automatically and not save to download document?

Hi twocolrs71! Thanks for posting in the Canon Community Forum. I see that you would like to use your CanonScan LiDE 120 to make a copy (scan and print) without saving the image on your computer.

The Copy button on the printer should allow you to do that if that button is set up properly within the settings for the IJ Scan Utility on your computer. There are four buttons on the front of the scanner. The Copy button is the third one from the left. You can see an illustration of the scanner buttons on page 218 of the LiDE 120 User Manual for Windows computers. If you have a Mac computer, you will need to go to page 210 of the Manual for Mac computers.

If you have a Windows computer and would like to see the manual, you can visit the following webpage:

If you have a Mac computer and would like to see the manual, you can visit the following webpage:

If that button is not working or if the image is still being saved, I recommend that you open the IJ Scan Utility on your computer and check the settings for that button. You will need to make sure that the correct printer is selected. After you open that program, you can do the following:

  1. Click on the Settings button in the lower right.
  2. When the Settings window opens, click on the middle symbol in the top right corner of the window (looks like a dark box with an arrow pointing down).
  3. Click on the Copy button option in the left column of the Settings window.
  4. In the right column (under Printer settings), make sure that the appropriate printer is selected. If you see Save as PDF to the right of Printer, click on that and choose your printer.
  5. Click on the OK button in the bottom right to close the Settings window.

When you are done, you can close the IJ Scan Utility and then press the Copy button on the scanner again.

If you are still having trouble with this and you purchased the scanner within the last year, I recommend calling in. You will need to create a Canon Account and register the scanner before you do that. To create a Canon Account, please visit the following page:

If you purchased your scanner more than a year ago, please write back and tell us what is happening after you press the Copy button on the scanner. In your reply, please include answers to the following questions:

  • What operating system is your computer running? For example, is it running Windows 11, Windows 10, MacOS 15 Sequoia)
  • Are you able to find and open the IJ Scan Utility on your computer?
  • Are you able to use the IJ Scan Utility to scan and save an image by clicking on the Document or Photo button?
  • Were you able to open the Settings window, click on the middle symbol in the top left, and select the Copy option in the left column of the Settings window?
  • Were you able to select your printer in the right side of the settings window and click on the OK button?

I hope this information helps. Thanks for choosing Canon.
