CanoScan LiDE 500F with Windows 11 - Can Not Scan

Bob29

Hello,  I have a CanoScan LiDE 500F scanner which I've been using for many years with a Windows 10 (64-bit) laptop.  Recently I bought a new laptop - Windows 11, and after installing the Canon software from the original media, I found that the scanner doesn't work.  Trying to scan gives "Unable to open TWAIN source..." and the Scanner dropdown in the Toolbox (v4.9) settings is empty.

Has anyone else had this problem, or has a workaround?     Many thanks in advance for any suggestions.

You need the right tool or a photo editing app for the scanner to send the scan to. Windows 11's "Photos" app won't work for this.

Install the "Windows Scan" app from the Microsoft Store. It's a free very simple scanning utility add-on that works nicely. The scan files will go to your Pictures\Scans folder.

An alternative is to install a photo editing app. I use one called "Paint.net". You can direct your scan output to its exe. file. It will be located in "C:\Program Files\Paint.NET\paintdotnet.exe". The file will open in the app. You can then save it to wherever you want. You don't have to edit it. Just save it.

Get the program from its website "getpaint.net". It is free.  It is also available at the Microsoft Store, but you pay for it there.

Thank you so much for your help, which has rescued my CanoScan LiDE 500F from the landfill.
