Hello, I have a CanoScan LiDE 500F scanner which I've been using for many years with a Windows 10 (64-bit) laptop. Recently I bought a new laptop - Windows 11, and after installing the Canon software from the original media, I found that the scanner doesn't work. Trying to scan gives "Unable to open TWAIN source..." and the Scanner dropdown in the Toolbox (v4.9) settings is empty.
Has anyone else had this problem, or has a workaround? Many thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Bob

Thanks for letting us know what Canon product you've got. The CanoScan LiDE 500F is an older model which we have retired. While that means that Canon USA no longer offers direct support for it, your friends here in the Canon Community are welcome to offer suggestions!
You can also speak with a Canon Upgrade Program specialist to help you score a modern replacement that would meet your current needs at a discount. You can reach them weekdays and Saturdays at 1-866-443-8002.
Hope this helps!

Hoping that another user in the Canon community can offer a solution - the scanner hardware is in good condition and working order, and I would hate to have to ditch it just because of a quirk (one of many!) in Windows 11.
Many thanks in advance for any suggestions.

It's a pay software, but VueScan by Hamrick Software rescues many old scanners that are no longer supported.

Thanks John, I checked out Viewscan and of all the many Canon scanners they do support, the LiDE 500F is specifically excluded, apparently because of a non-standard chipset that it uses.
Many thanks anyway for the feedback.

On windows 11, I got my CanoScan LiDE 500F scanner working with the canon drivers by extracting the drivers and installing manually via device manager, then using the canon toolbox to scan

Lee-uk many thanks for this.
I tried to install the drivers via the device manager, pointing to a local directory containing the 30 scanner files (.dll, .sys etc) but device manager complained that it needed a .inf file, which I don't have. I've looked on the Canon install disk, but perhaps it's buried inside one of the installShield .cab files, which won't open in Windows. How did you manage to avoid / work around this?
Thanks in advance for any feedback you can provide.

I used 7-zip to extract the files first
7zip can be downloaded from
I downloaded the ScanGear CS for windows 7 (64 bit) - (lide500fvst6411222a_64en.exe) from the canon download site:
I extracted lide500fvst6411222a_64en.exe with 7-zip which give me a folder with setupSG.exe and README.txt.
I then extracted setupSG.exe with 7-zip to give me the a folder with the inf file you can use to install manually via device manager
This didn't work with the windows scan utility but when I installed the CanoScan toolbox I was able to scan. The toolbox can be downloaded from the following location:

SUCCESS !
Lee-uk many thanks for those excellent instructions.
The scanner drivers and application installed ok, and I can now scan either through the Toolbox application or manually using the buttons on the scanner.
Good to know that the scanner has a new lease of life on Win11, and that I've done the planet a big favour by not having to scrap perfectly good hardware.
Once again many thanks for your help.
