CanoScan 9000F Mark II macOS Sonoma and Sequoia compatibility

I have a Canon 9000F mark II flatbed scanner; attached to a MacBook now running sequoia. The Apple utility Image Capture stopped working with the 9000 with Sonoma and still doesn't work with Sequoia. I've looked for new Mac OS drivers, but upon arriving at that page, it states the scanner is not compatible with both Sonoma (14) and now Sequoia (15).  Why doesn't Canon update the 9000 driver for these latest versions of Mac OS?? I see notes in the thread below that are more than a year old, saying they are awaiting for new drivers.

I can't help but I do feel sorry for you Mac people. It is terrible the way Apple handles OS upgrades. Perhaps Canon doesn't do the latest Mac OS is because the Canon 9000F mark II has been discontinued. Why you folks put up with each OS upgrade and wonder if your gear and apps will still run is beyond me.

To rub salt in to your score, I have the 9000F first model on my PC and it still works perfectly. My son has a Mac and goes through the same thing. I know there are some "tricks" you can do to get some older apps and gear to work but you need to ask a good Mac person how to do it.

I went to the Canon Canoscan 9000F markII driver download site and selected Venture as Mac OS. The 9000F markII scanner driver ver.19.3.0(Mac) will pop up. Download it and install it, and the Canon scan utility will work again.  The only drawback is to go thru the same process when you need to scan items.

I have the previous version of the scanner, the 9000F, and just got a new M4 MBP. I had the scanner working as expected on my old M1 MBP on Sequoia so I was stymied trying to get it to work with the new laptop.

After many hours with ChatGPT, I ended up with this solution:

I deleted/removed EVERYTHING that I'd installed trying to fix things. This was tedious but I didn't want a file remnant to be the fault.

  1. I reset all my scanner permissions in Terminal:
    tccutil reset Camera
    tccutil reset All com.apple.Image_Capture

  2. Downloaded and Install ICA Driver 4.1.4a (Mac)
This is the last ICA (Image Capture Architecture) driver supported by Canon for macOS 10.13, and it enables scanning via macOS’s native Image Capture.

  3. Downloaded and Install CanoScan 9000F Scanner Driver v. 16.1.0b (Mac)
This is the last supported TWAIN-compliant driver for the Canon CanoScan 9000F on macOS 10.13

After that the scanner appeared in the Printer & Scanner setup (via Settings) and works like a charm.

I know your scanner is the 9000 Mk II but maybe an adaptation of this approach might help. Good luck!

this is VERY helpful so thanks.  However, for the final step (installation of the ICA driver), my MacBook will not open the pkg file, claiming it cannot be verified. I am sure I downloaded this directly from the Canon site.  Should I go to settings and tell the OS to open it anyway?

Here is the site from which I downloaded the ICA pkg file:

thanks!!

I would -- but I'm a bit of a risk-taker 😉

The file version matches mine (4.1.4a) and if the source of that is reliable, I'd give it a go. Another route would be to find the same file on another Canon site for comparison (size and revision number, etc.).

That procedure essentially works for the 9000F MarkII. The only difference is that you need to select the correct device. The trick of using the macOS 10.13 drivers applies.

I recently purchased an M4 Pro Mac Mini. Getting my 9000F Mark II working took a lot of trial and error. But here's what worked for me.

I am running Sequoia 15.2.

I installed ICA Driver Ver. 5.0.1 (Mac). This can be found on a DMG with the following title:

misd-mac-ijscanner15f-5_0_1-ea21_3.dmg

The other thing that had me tearing my hair out: USB connectivity. The M4 Mac Mini has three thunderbolt ports in back and two USB ports in front. I have several devices that convert the USB-C ports on the Mac Mini into USB A ports. One is a CalDigit TS4. Plugging the scanner into one of its USB-A ports did not work! I have a dongle that plugs into USB-C and presents three USB-A ports and a gigabit ethernet port. Plugging the scanner into that did not work!   I finally got an Apple USB-C to USB Adapter. Part No. MJ1M2AM/A. I plugged this into one of the two USB ports on the front of the Mac Mini and then plugged the scanner's USB cable into that. No hubs of any kind in between. Voila. The 9000F Mark II showed up in as a device in the Image Capture app. I have an Apple 27" Studio Display with USB-C ports on the back.Plugging the Apple USB-C to USB Adapter into one of the USB-C ports on the back did not work! I had to use one of the USB ports on the front of the Mac Mini.

I'm assuming the driver I installed is dependent on Rosetta 2 to function. I'm also assuming that it's a matter of time until Apple puts a bullet into Rosetta 2. So... the clock is ticking, but at least I have it working for now.

Hope that helps.
