C70 OWNERS BEWARE — Halfway through a shoot, my record button failed. I take excellent care of my C70 and nothing unusual happened before or during the indoor production that day. I have never heard of this happening and it is deeply concerning that THE most important button on the camera could fail for no apparent reason. Nothing I tried could unstick the button.
I am posting about this so Canon is aware of potential quality control issues. I tried to get in touch with local LA Canon reps, but they were exceedingly unhelpful. I gave them a chance to resolve the issue internally, however now I have no choice but to let others know about this and to rethink my own opinion that Canon customer service is good and that their cameras are highly reliable.
I took it to the Canon repair center in Burbank shortly after, where the repair tech confirmed my camera was in excellent condition and could not give a clear reason why the record button had failed. His hypothesis was that debris got in the button, but I don’t see how this was possible. And even after he repaired it, he could not give me a clear reason why it had failed. Apparently, they cannot replace just that button so they had to replace the entire top unit and the cost was just around $500 — FOR ONE BUTTON. In my view, this is an unacceptable cost, and disappointing service.
I welcome Canon’s response to this issue in hopes of resolution to retain my business, my trust, and my recommendation industry-wide.
