magePROGRAF PRO-1000: Benefits over 4-cartridge printers

I am enjoying my Pro 1000 printer, but I’ve noticed something that seems odd. When I compare art prints that I printed with my Pro 1000 (a 12 cartridge printer) to the same images that I print with my Canon Maxify 5020 (a 4 cartridge printer), the output is virtually the same. I haven’t made the same comparison with photos, only art prints (digital images of colorful posters), but seeing the output of the 4-cartridge printer, I can’t help but wonder why I’m paying for my Pro 1000 to drink 12 cartridges at a much higher cost. Other than the ability of the Pro 1000 to make larger prints, I’m not seeing its benefit over the 4-cartridge printer. Anyone have a similar experience?

Hi ajlesq,

The main color difference would be that the imagePROGRAF PRO-1000 has the ability to print a wider range of colors than that of a 4 ink tank printer.

Have you seen any of the reviews Keith Cooper, (Northlight Iamages) did with the Epson 8500? He compared some of its output to the Pro 1000. I don't use the 4 ink printers but wonder if you'll see distinct differences with gradations, shadows, vivid colors and such. Hopefully others, with experience, will chime in.
