imagePROGRAF PRO-310 wide margin error constantly

Less than a week into owning this printer and the output is gorgeous, but I have constant problems with getting the images on the paper the way I want them. I printed a few borderless initially but stopped based on input from several people.

The specific problem I have for this post is I have an 11x14-sized images that I'm printing on 13x19 Moab paper (selected as A3+ in the print dialog and using the correct Moab ICC in color mode under color management). I'm outputting the file from LR then importing it into Canon Professional Print and Layout. I position the image on the virtual paper which leaves an inch top and bottom and 2.5 inches on the sides. It all looks fine, then I hit 'Print' and I get, "The selected paper size does not have wide margins. If you continue printing with the current settings, problems such as paper abrasion may cause paper stains or deterioration of the print quality. Printing with a paper size that has wide margins is recommended". To which my first reaction is WTF? Are 1-inch top/bottom and 2.5-inch side margins not wide enough? The first few prints I got that error when I selected 'Borderless Printing' and just hit 'OK' and that works for this error too. But then, what's the point of the error? It's making me really uncomfortable to just keep bypassing something someone designed for some reason, but...?

The error might be related to the paper size selection. I don't have the Pro-310; I have a Pro-100.

For certain heavier weight papers Canon enforces wide margins and the paper choices reflect that.

There is A3+ and A3+ with 30mm margin (which would be top and bottom) That exceeds 1 inch. Do you get similar choices for your printer?

The print dialog is a little different on the 310, but close enough. The same choices seem to be there but without the use of flyouts. I guess I'm just not understanding the point of an error message like that. The print heads would not get close to the edge of the paper with even a 1/4-inch margin, would they? I was thinking that I'd be printing a lot of photos with a margin of 1/4 inch as I got comfortable with the machine. 310_SS_PrintDialog_1.png

The margin is at the leading edge an trailing edge of the paper. The reason stated is that heavier papers are less flexible and head strikes can occur at the beginning and end of the print. I believe there are settings for your printer to override the requirement.
