Canon Pro-100 on screen manual won't install

Running on iMac, recently upgraded OS to Catalina. Old manual doesn't work. New manual won't install - "from an unidentified developer" - no option to circumvent as one usually has in this situation. I managed to get around this hurdle and got the installer running. When it came to the "Create an Alias" stage an error popped up "installer encountered an error ... contact manufacturer" - the only option was to "Quit". So Canon, you're the manufacturer, what's your problem?
P.S. The driver updated (miracle); also profiles for Canon papers (after discovering their absence on my first attempt to print with the new driver); also failed firmware update (as discussed at great length elsewhere). What's your problem Canon?

The on-screen manual is 32-bit and not compatible with Catalina.

At the beginning of the download process, Canon detected Catalina as my OS. Is it too picky to expect them to say "Sorry, it won't work with Catalina"?
