Have had this Canon Pixma MX490 since new, always used Canon genuine Ink cartridges (Black only, as I do not use color).
A week ago I got support code 1704, Ink Absorber Full. After researching, it says to hit OK to bypass but eventually it will not let you anymore. I printed all week with no issues, clearing the 1704 code each time I powered printer on. I changed out Ink cartridge Friday after it started fading, and Saturday decided I would clean the ink absorber, which barely had anything on it. A bit more searching, and turns out it is a pre-programmed error code to come on after so many pages printed, not because the absorber is physically full. Also, you need a tool/ software to clear it.
Come Monday morning, first time using it since new ink and cleaning and reinstalling absorber, the alignment is off. Tried the alignment process through printer itself, did not help. Tried to do a manual one via Canon software on computer, and it will not allow a test page to print, saying there was an error. I would imagine this is because of the 1704 code, even though I already clicked OK on printer to allow printing. So I cannot get the values to input, nor can I even get to the screen to input the values manually to try to correct alignment.
At this point, I'm wondering if the ink cartridge itself is faulty? I've put over 40 ink cartridges through this printer in the past few years alone, and never once had an alignment issue. Cleaning the absorber is just removing a thin sponge strip, which wouldn't effect anything on the alignment side.
Yes, I understand it's an outdated printer, but it was working fine up until this point. Just don't want to waste money on a new cartridge to give that a shot if it could be something else.

Hello,
We understand that having a problem with a printer is frustrating. In this case, the PIXMA MX490 is an older model which we have retired. While that means that Canon USA no longer offers direct support for it, your friends here in the Canon Community are welcome to offer suggestions!
You can also speak with a Canon Upgrade Program specialist to help you score a modern replacement that would meet your current needs at a discount. You can reach them weekdays and Saturdays at 1-866-443-8002.
Hope this helps!

You may have already taken these steps.
The PIXMA MX490 error 1704 is a common issue that usually points to a problem with the print head or the ink cartridges.
To resolve this error, follow these steps:
Inspect the Print Head:
Examine the Ink Cartridges:
Reset the Printer: Sometimes, resetting the printer can clear temporary errors. Turn off the printer, unplug it for a minute, then plug it back in and turn it on.
