Hi,
I have a brand new MF465DW multifunction with latest firmware purchased today.
Connected to Dell desktop running Win 11 via Eero mesh WiFi private network
Firewall temporarily turned off.
Installed all software (master setup, MF Scan Utility)
Printing a test page works fine.
MF Scan Utility sees the scanner which can be selected although the serial number looks wrong. ??.
But trying to scan anything results in the communication error (no error code).
Any ideas? Thanks, Steve

Greetings Steve,
If you are referring to the alpha numeric name of the device found in the upper right hand corner of the MF Scan Utility, that's is not a serial number. It's a MAC address (truncated) which is either the Ethernet or WiFi network adapter.
3rd party antivirus can cause communication issues.
Is your Windows 11 running feature release 24H2? There is an issue with this feature release affecting scanning from from multiple printer manufacturers. While not ideal, you can use Windows Fax and Scan. Microsoft has acknowledged the issue, but they have not provided a date for a patch or fix yet.

Indeed, running 24H2.
Turning off Windows defender didn't help. No surprise.
Confirmed that the MAC address is what is being reported. It fooled me by listing Canon MF460 ser_XXX. I thought it was for serial number but evidently it means "series" LOL.
MANY thanks Rick!

Greetings ,
I'm sorry about the 24H2 thing. It's kind of a bummer because the printer's great and so is it's scanner. It's been a few weeks now so I imagine a patch will be forthcoming. Waiting is never fun though.

I just had to do a Clean Install of Windows 11 and found too that the MF Scan Utility would not communicate with my MF726Cdw. I even installed (and left it in place) the Windows 10 (x64) [Windows 32-bit & 64-bit] Patch for Network Scan, USB Scan. Still no luck.
During my Windows 11 re-install, updates also were installed: 2024-12 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 24H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5048667) and 2024-11 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8.1 for Windows 11, version 24H2 for x64 (KB5045934).
Still had issues UNTIL...
An optional Windows update was also posted: 2024-11 Cumulative Update Preview for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8.1 for Windows 11, version 24H2 for x64 (KB5048162) was installed today and voila!! MF Scan Utility now communicates with my MF726Cdw!! It looks like Microsoft fixed something.

KB5048162 did not help me on 24H2. MF654Cdw and MF Scan still can't connect.

It's now mid-February and I'm just giving this thread a bump to ask if anything has been resolved on this scanner communication issue yet? I'm using an MF445-dw and having it on both my Windows 11 Desktop and Notebook running 24H2. Also checked my update history and I do have KB5048162 since late November. The only way I have found I can use my scanner so far is to insert a USB thumb drive into the socket and scan directly to it. Far from ideal however.

Try this. It worked for me.

Thanks for the reply. I was seeing some responses before mentioning the Master Setup software. This is a package I am unfamiliar with. Canon does not list it for my model MF445DW. That model is from around 2019 or 2020 I believe. So what does it do? I normally have two packages I download and install: the MF Drivers package for printer, fax, & scanner. And the MF ScanGear package. Not sure if my printer is too old for the Master Setup software? Does it get installed in addition to the two packages I mentioned above?
I see this morning there is a new MF Drivers package on the Canon website for my printer, dated 2/12/2025. Think I'll uninstall current drivers and ScanGear and give that a try for now.

The Master Setup is able to auto-detect your printer and download the appropriate software and drivers without you having to think about it. Uninstall everything and give it a shot. Just make sure the printer is on and visible when you run the Master Setup app.
