Canon Pixma G620 – Cannot install Canon driver and defaulting to Airprint

Hello all,

I have a Canon Pixma G620 and I am having trouble getting my Canon driver installed as my Mac keeps defaulting to Bonjour Multifunction/AirPrint, leaving me with little control over color for my printer.

I have researched this at length and tried a number of different things, including
1. Uninstalling previous drivers that defaulted to AirPrint and turning my printer off.
2. Freshly downloading the driver directly from the canon website here: https://www.usa.canon.com/support/p/pixma-g620
3. Turning my computer on when prompted by the installer.
4. Going to Printers and Scanners -- Add Printer -- Use -- Select Software (I see no canon drivers as options, only "Canon G600 Series Bonjour Multifunction" outside of this menu.

I have repeated the steps above about 10 times. Uninstalling, reinstalling, freshly installing, etc etc etc, and my Mac still defaults to AirPrint. I have no use for AirPrint. I bought this printer for photo printing and need very intentional and specific control over colors.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Ali

Greetings ,

What version and build of MAC OS are you using the printer with?

Can you confirm the connection method, USB, Wireless etc?

I installed the PIXMA G620 on a Mac Mini OS 26.2 Tahoe and used a USB cable.  The Mac OS automatically used the Canon G600 Series-AirPrint 4.0 driver when I installed the printer.  Printing documents and pictures worked fine from Mac Mini and iPhones as expected.   But when I used the IJ Scan Utility Lite to scan pictures into the Mac Photos App the Canon IJ Scan Utility Lite was intermittent.  It would work once and then would not find the scanner for the next picture scan.  Sometimes it would look like it was working, the printer scanner bar was moving, then it would either lockup or never produce the scanned image.  The Apple Image Capture software was doing the same thing.  After turning the G620 off It would work once but wouldn't scan the next photo without turning the printer off and back on.

After trying many different settings for the Photo Scan option in the Canon IJ Scan Utility Lite software I decided to turn the printer off, disconnect the USB cable, start the Canon IJ Scan Utility Lite software, and scan pictures.  Voila! It would scan multiple pictures consecutively without any issues.

Moral of the story.  Don't use a USB cable to connect the PIXMA G620 to a Mac with MacOS 26!  The Apple Canon G600 series-AirPrint driver will get confused and the scanner will not be dependable.

I spent many hours, tried a few different scanner software packages and searched the internet for solutions.  I found nothing that suggested this conflict.  I hope post this saves someone the frustration I had to deal with.  Also found a post that Canon has a suggestion to use the CUPS driver for USB but apparently that brings in other issues with printing from network devices like iPhones.  Therefore I never tried the CUPS driver.
