Canon MF663Cdw Keeps Disconnecting from WiFi

Hi everyone,

I'm having a persistent issue with my Canon MF663Cdw randomly disconnecting from my WiFi network. When this happens, the printer disappears from my router’s connected device list and I’m unable to print until I restart the printer. Here are the troubleshooting steps I’ve already tried:

• Connected the printer to a 2.4 GHz network
• Assigned the printer a fixed IP address (DHCP reservation) through my ASUS router settings
• Turned Power Save Mode OFF under Connection Settings
• Confirmed the printer is running the latest firmware
• Moved the printer right next to the router to rule out signal issues

Despite these changes, the printer still disconnects from the network and stops responding to print jobs until the printer power is restarted.

Has anyone experienced this with the MF663Cdw or found a reliable fix? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You you don't have to use the wifi to print, connect the printer  to your router using an ethernet cable It shoud have a port free I would think. The printer will be on your network, any device can still print wirelessly to it, but it should not disconnect from the router. Here are the instructions to connect to a wired lan.

Hello, I’m having exactly the same problem; there’s no wired network where the printer is located!

Thanks for the suggestion. I’m aware that using Ethernet would avoid the issue, but my question is specifically about why the printer keeps disconnecting from Wi-Fi. Ethernet is not applicable to my use case and I am very aware hard wired is the preferred method.

WiFi is not as reliable as a hard-wired connection. Period. The radio connection can be interfered-with by distance or the structure of your house, if it was a strong connection to begin with.  A printer can also not hold the connection. I have a Pixma inkjet that would lose its WiFi connection even though it had a static IP address, and had to be rebooted to work again. I finally gave up and placed it where I could connect it via USB to my primary computer (it does not have wired network capability). 

WiFi has become the be-all-and-end-all but it has weaknesses.

We use printers of various makes and models via Wi-Fi; we’re experiencing this issue with the Canon MF664Cdw printer we recently purchased. When the printer’s Wi-Fi connection drops, it also displays an error when trying to access the Wi-Fi AP list via the menu. I suspect it’s a software issue; if I switch the printer off and on again, I can use it without any problems for a while. Incidentally, when the printer’s network connection drops, the main screen still shows it as connected to Wi-Fi. It’s quite surprising that a brand like Canon is still causing users such simple problems in 2026.

I have two Canon lasers, connected to two different networks, both using Asus Routers, wirelessly with absolutely no issues.  While ethernet isn't subject to the same overhead as wireless, the latter works just fine and has been 100% reliable in both of my use cases.  I do have both printers assigned using a static IP on the routers. (example below)

The first suggestion I always make is assign the device a static IP, the second would be updating the printer's firmware which can be done from the LCD panel if you scroll to the right.  Look for "Update Firmware" icon.  I have not made any changes to either device's power management settings, both sleep after 60 Seconds.  Print jobs come from Android, iPhones, Mac and windows PC's.  In some cases we use the Canon print app from the mobile devices.

Unfortunately, I have not been successful reproducing the reported issues.  Both devices are present in the list of attached devices and can be pinged from another device on the network.  Try upgrading the firmware on the printer and on your router if it's out of date.  This is often helpful.

Hi Rick. Thanks for your help resolving my first issue. Now my printer is being removed periodically from the network (but otherwise working). So my question is, how do I assign the Canon printer a static IP on Mac?

Where to start.  Assigning a static IP Is done on your router.  Depending on the brand and model, it may be called address reservation, static IP, etc.   Note, when this is done on the router, you do not need to make any changes to the printers UI or programming.  It's important to restart the printer after the assignment is made on the router.

Once that's done, you're ready to install it on your Mac or windows device.

If a printer instance exists in the printers and scanners applet, select it and use the minus (-) button to remove it.  Now restart your Mac. 

Return to the printer and scanners applet and look at the top of the interface next to the default add printer icon.  Just to the right to the right, here's a globe.  Select that. 

On the first line, Address: enter the IP address you have reserved.  You'll notice a few lines below that the IP address will replicate.  Name:  This field is editable.  Give your printer a friendly name.  (Example) MF663Cdw.  Leave the Protocol field with the default selection. 

The location field is optional.  Some people include the printer's location.  Office, downstairs or just leave it blank.

Down below there's a box marked Use:.  Use the drop down to select the Canon print driver installed previously.   If the printer was installed using air print previously, you'll need to install the driver in order for it to be selectable.  

This is is an example.  Your interface may look slightly different depending on your version of Mac OS.

When all the fields are populated you can click ok to add the printer.
