My SH50 HS stops filming in the space of a few minutes (much faster than at memory limit for clip at 25 min as I've seen in other posts).
A rectangle with squares inside appears on the screen, and when the squares fill the rectangle it ends the shot and won't start another for a period of around 30 seconds.
This basically makes it impossible for me to film wildlife (what I got the camera for) doing anything.
Is there a setting I need to change?

Most likely your memory card WRITE speed is too slow. Need a faster card.

Yes Id be suspicious of your memory card. It should be a class 6 or higher but if this just started happening then maybe that card is corrupt.
I would try reformatting that card in the camera and if that did not work I would try a new card, class 10 is what I use.
