The date/time battery has no bearing on pictures being saved. You need to ascertain that the SD card has pictures on it. Do you see them in review mode?  And, take the card out and read it on a computer with an SD slot or card reader. If you do, they can not disappear from the card when turning the camera off and on.

If pictures are not seen in review mode, or on a computer, you have not recorded any. The camera is broken. Replace it. It's an oldie, not worth fixing even if someone would attempt it.

Greetings and welcome Emma3.

Here are instructions for replacing the cr1220 date and time battery.

Replacing the Date Battery for the PowerShot A550, A560 and A570 IS. https://share.google/aXFX6ZUocMaSmKrr3

The battery costs a few dollars and is easy to replace.

Can you confirm that the camera has an SD card installed?

If it is present, please perform a format of the card from the camera menu.  Now try taking some photos.  Then try to review them and let us know the result?

As normadel pointed out, this camera would not be worth repairing and it's unlikely you could find somebody to do so.  Money would be much better spent on a new camera.  I'd like to recommend the PowerShot V1.  It is available worldwide.

Did you format the card in the camera?

Are you using a full size SD card? micro cards with adapters are bad juju.

If this does not resolve it, you know why the person you got it from got rid of it.
