My powershot A590 will not upload photos to my computer. new laptop - Windows8

I recently purchased a new laptop. It has Windows 8. After 5 attempts, I finally have the Image Browser loaded and working. The issue now is that the computer does not recognize that there are photos on the camera to be uploaded. Have I missed a step? Am very frustrated.
