PowerShot V1 - Can't transfer images to Computer via USB

TonyShot

Hello, I have the PowerShot V1.

I am unable to copy a file from the camera to my computer via USB cable.
I get the following error message:

Error Copying File or Folder > "The requested value cannot be determined"

I have seen a point made in the manual that Wi-Fi needs to be disable, which it is in my case.
And internet search results suggest making sure "Photo Import/Remote Control" is selected under "Choose USB connection app" - Which is how I have my camera set up in the cameras menu.

I'm using Windows 10 and with my Sony Camera I have zero issues copying many GB raw images and transferring to my computer. But with this Canon camera I can't even transfer a single image that's only MB's in size.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Use a card reader.  They’re inexpensive and faster.

You say that you are “transferring” files from the camera. Does that mean you are attempting to copy files or move them? The camera will not permit you to write to the memory card, which is what moving files requires,

Hey there!
It sounds like your camera hasn't fully initiated the handshake or is stuck trying to establish a webcam/streaming protocol.

Hey there! To get your images downloading to your Windows 10 PC, we just need to make sure the camera is telling the computer it's a storage device and not a webcam. Here is the exact path directly from the manual:

  1. Turn on the camera and press the Menu button.

  2. Select the Communication Functions tab (the globe/network icon 🌐).

  3. Select [Choose USB connection app].

  4. Change the setting to [Photo Import/Remote Control].

Once that is set, plug the USB cable directly into your Windows 10 PC, open File Explorer, and you will see the camera listed under 'This PC' where you can open the DCIM folder and drag your files over

If you follow these steps and still can't download your images, reach out to support and they'll help get you connected! They're at 1-800-OK-CANON (800-652-2666), weekdays from 9am to 6pm (ET).

Stephen raised a good point.  The camera will communicate with only one app at a time. If another camera app is active, then it will have exclusive access to the camera.

Hi Stephen.
Yes, what I did is exactly as you suggested. So I will reach out to support at that number you gave.
Thanks for you help.

And by the way, just for clarity - In Step 1 you list  "Select [Choose USB connection app]"
The 'Choose USB connection app' is not under the 'wrench' menu. It is under the wavey line that has arrows at both ends(Network settings). But I still chose that and the "Photo Import/Remote Control' option.

"Use a card reader. They’re inexpensive and faster."

That's not what I was asking about.

"You say that you are “transferring” files from the camera. Does that mean you are attempting to copy files or move them? The camera will not permit you to write to the memory card, which is what moving files requires,"

No I didn't say that. I originally stated the context of what I am attempting to do:

"I am unable to copy a file from the camera to my computer via USB cable."

My subsequent comments are in that context, i.e. Copy file from Camera, then paste to computer.
The computer recognizes and sees the camera. So it's on the computer that I go to the camera listed and copy the desired image from the folder listed within the camera and attempt to paste the copied file elsewhere on the Computer.

"If another camera app is active, then it will have exclusive access to the camera."

I don't have any other camera app. Thanks for the suggestion to look for that.

Aw, that was my bad. Thank you for letting me know! I've corrected it!
