I have had my Powershot for about 11 years and, since I bought it, it has randomly shut off when videoing. I thought it may have been because it overheated because I was using it outside in the sun. I just tried to record a video inside my house and it shut off 18 minutes into the recording. When it shuts off it doesn't give any indication it has shut off, no beep or anything. Could this be a firmware problem or a hardware problem? Has anyone else had this problem? If so, how did you fix it?

How much available space is on the card?
When was the last time you performed a low level format on the card?
Have you tried a different card?
Yes, it’s possible that the camera could be overheating. If it were, it be very warm to the touch.

I finally got hold of customer service and they said that with most digital cameras they shut off without warning when the video reaches 4 GB. Only some high end ($1000+) cameras will exceed that. He said, if I want to video without paying for a high end camera, I might want to buy a video camera.
