With the G7X Mark II, is scene mode (eg SCN Underwater) recorded in the xmp (or exif) data?

Yes, but only Canon software will probably care.
If you are shooting RAW, most third party RAW processors will ignore it.

Thanks. In the meantime, I found out that Lightroom (my RAW processor) is not very good about letting you modify which metadata is displayed. I'll try some workaround in my work flow. And certainly keep this in mind the next time I'm tempted to use this (or other) scene mode.

If you like to use SCN modes alot you could:
1. Shoot RAW +JPEG for one shoot and then compare the RAW and JPEG in Lightroom. Edit the Liightroom RAW image to look like the JPEG and save apreset with the SCN mode name.
2. Open the RAW file in Canon DPP, do as little (or much) editing as you want in DPP and batch process the file as a TIFF to Lightroom. A batch process can be a single image. Finish up whatever editing you want in LR.
