Crucial part missing

Hi! I am new to using Canons and it appears that an essential part is broken - it’s the thing that gives you access to the battery and card. Can anyone tell me what the part is called and how easy it is to get it repaired on a college budget?

Thank you!

Hi, Margcellist!

So that the Community can help you better, we need to know exactly which Canon camera model you're using. That, and any other details you'd like to give will help the Community better understand your issue!

I do not know which camera you have.  There should be a door that covers the battery compartment.  When the door closes, it presses on a micro-switch that tells the camera that the battery door is full closed and latched.  Once done, then the camera will power up.

Once you know the model name for your camera you could call Canon at 1-800-OK-CANON and see if they could provide the part. If they cannot you could check uscamera-dot-com and search for the part.
