Can I change my Canon SX50 settings so that every picture I take has a unique number?

No KT unfortunately you cannot do that within the camera. they are always numbered consectutively. You can arrange them into categories and different folders or face detect names etc but you cannot remane them or renumber them one by one. Each one will have a specific date and time tag to it and can be filtered that way .

It would be a nice thing to do though and i can see why one might want that renumbering or renaming option.

Depending on your objective the answer is a qualified Yes.

 

If you select Continuous Numbering (see page 205 of manual) you will get file numbers from 0001 to 9999.
