We have several Field employees who go out to schools and are taking hundreds to thousands of pictures of each school and are on limited time. They are looking for many things, including problems that need to be addressed. So, often there are times when they see something that needs to be noted. It would be easier for them if they could caption this while taking the picture. So we are looking for cameras for them that would offer a point-and-shoot voice captioning option, so that when they see a problem they can record their notes and then quickly move on. I would say they could record a video, but they need to be in picture format which is added to a database to be reviewed elsewhere. Does anyone know if any of the Powershot series (or any camera) offers an option to attach a voice memo to a picture?
Thanks for your help

I am not aware of any PowerShot cameras (or any point and shoot) that will record voice on still shots. The format of a JPEG file is not conducive to attaching voice captioning in camera. With the quick actuation that is required for photos, it doesn't seem feasible or even possible to do that in camera. That would defeat the camera's ability to be ready for the next shot in a timely manner. Have you tried doing the video and snapping stills while the video is running? There are several cameras on the market that can do that.

In some EOS, it is possible with Magic lantern. For PowerShot, there is no such function in CHDK.

Nikon Coolpix 5200 had this feature. Worked like a charm. However, like most great ideas, it was omitted from all future Nikon (and, or so it would seem, Canon) compact cameras. Probably in favour of such redundant features as the ability to crop pics and add effects such as sepia or B/W, all of which can be done far more effectively once the pics have been downloaded to a laptop.

I like to narrate pictures after I take them. For many years I used a Sony MVC_CD500. Now I use Canon ELPH SD1100. You view the picture after you take it and then select ''VOICE MEMO''. You can record for up to 1 minute. The sound is not very good when played back on the camera's tiny speaker, but it is rather good when played back on a TV. I do not know why more cameras do not have this feature.

The EOS 1D Series is able to do this. But, it makes much sense today to just record a short video clip like a vlogger.

Actually . . . There is, or was, more than a few Canon models capable of recording short audio clips attached to image files.
As for more recent models:
R5 voice memo

R3 voice memo

Or if you prefer to work with some of the "Legacy" models:
Powershot A620

Powershot A630 A640

Powershot G5

If you're doing document searches for other models try both sound "memo" and "annotation" for your search words. Canon seemed to use both terms to describe the same function.
