How do I set the scanner resolution for emailing PDF?

I can only find settings for "density", "sharpness", and "file size". But it is not clear, what these settings actually do and there is no significant change visible when I adjust those settings.

I would much rather set a scanner resultion and compression level manually instead of murky "adjust quality" settings where I don'T know what they actually do...

I think you've gotten the only answers there are.  If you want to stick with the LCD, you can configure default settings in the printer's web UI once, and then the LCD has the options that the LCD has.  There are also more capable third party scanner software options, but you don't want to use them.  So you're stuck with the LCD, and what you see there is what you get.  No hidden secrets.

Can you tell us what operating system you are using the printer with (version and build), what drivers you installed and what application you are scanning from? MF scan utility, ScanGear, etc.  A screen shot of what you are seeing might be helpful.

I am looking for "scan PDF to email" resolution and compression settings in the printer (display interface or web interface). Not sure, how the PC OS, scan/printer driver, application used, or "where I want to PRINT from" are relevant for that.

Printer is "ImageClass MF643CDW" (I cannot find any details on firmware version)

PC OS is: Windows 11 Version 23H2 OS Build 22631.4169

I asked the questions above because you did not state them clearly in your original post.  Now we know you're scanning to email from the printer's LCD and have questions about it's settings/controls.  

The firmware version can be displayed by clicking Home > Status Monitor > Device Information > Version.  The DCOM  version is the firmware. 🙂

"density", "sharpness", and "file size"

Density setting, adjusts the amount of toner used, which affects the darkness and saturation of the print.

Sharpness setting, controls the clarity and definition of outlines on printed text and images. It makes the edges of lines, shapes or text more or less defined. How much depends on the degree of softness or sharpness you are starting with.

File size is the DPI (Low, Standard (default) or high)

On my devices (644, 656) increasing the density makes the image or text more or less saturated. Again depending on what it is. Black and white, color, an image or text. I use this to increase the darkness of scan that is dull or faint.

Increasing sharpness works well to increase the detail on low quality images, It can decrease the level of fuzziness or softness.

When I'm scanning a doc for email, I typically use the standard setting. This setting will increase or decrease DPI making the file larger or smaller.

**Worth noting. The granular level of control you are looking for is available in the MF Scan Utility or ScanGear Applications. These can be installed on your PC or MAC.  ScanGear is the more powerful of the two:

Thanks for getting back on this.

You talk a lot about "print" quality, but I guess I can imagine what it means for scans.

More importantly: you mention that MF Scan Utility or ScanGear allow for setting DPI resolution etc.. I cannot test this now as I first need my IT to authorize the install next week. But I imagine that those setting sonly apply to scans made via those applications. Or do those apps also allow chaning settings in the scanner's "firmware" so that they would apply to "scan-to-email" executed through the printer/scanner interface itself?

My point is: I don'T want to start up the computer, open the apps, scan something to the PC and then manually email the scan each time. I want to modify the scan-properties for direct scan to email using the  shortcut profile in the printer/scanner display. I will only want to press that button and the scanner does the rest with properties I define once and for all to be used with that scan profile.

Well, you can set Scangear to always use the same settings, and it will scan and attach the document to a new email, and you can then specify the recipient and subject. You can also check to make sure that the scan is good.  I find Scangear, either standalone or through the MF Scan Utility, to be faster and easier than using buttons on the unit display.

I use scan gear most of the time too but I understand he wants the convenience of scanning /sending from the printers LCD.  

I don't have any problems with it either as It does exactly what I need 99% of the time.  If I need a document or image to be more or less saturated sharper or smaller, I just used the three basic (adjustable) settings on the LCD.  

It's possible to control the default settings in the remote UI.  These are not intended to be used on a scan by scan basis, instead as a default configuration.  However, once again I find that using the settings for saturation sharpness and size can be easily manipulated on the LCD.

I really appreciate everybody chipping in their 5cents - but I would appreciate even more, if someone could give a clear answer to the actual question:

Is there or is there not a way to define the DPI resolution and compression level of scans executed throught eh printer build in LCD interface.

I don't mind changing those priter settings through the printer's web UI or some external software once as default for future scans executed via the printer LCD panel.

But to be clear: I am not looking for advice related to executing scans via software running on an external device (Laptop, PC, tablet etc.).

The reason is: even with maxiimumg density, file size and sharpness I still get scan quality well below what the scanner should be capable of doing based on it's specs.

Thanks, appreciated - albeit quite disappointing that such basic feature is not available.
