imageCLASS MF249dw cannot receive fax when set to phone/answering machine

Hello, this problem was corrected twice with Canon telephone support in the past which was kind enough to take the call & solve it, which might have been new network settings but remember it did stump tech for a bit. Telephone/answering machine is connected properly to Canon in top slot (with telephone line line mode never changed at "B" versus A); Canon is properly connected to telephone outlet in the wall from bottom slot of printer. RX mode set correctly to "Answering Machine." Network settings automatically acquired with same settings as before. But although able to send fax, unable to receive faxes automatically. Please help.

Hello Stevesmari,

If you are using the MF249dw with an answering machine, you can try and lower the number of rings that the answering machine picks up on to see if the fax machine is able to automatically receive faxes. If you are using VOIP for the phoneline connection, you can try unplugging your modem/router for 5 seconds to see if you are able to receive faxes once the network is back up.

We would be happy to assist with the issue. To provide some feedback or some troubleshooting steps, we would need some additional information. If you could reply to this message with the information below, we can provide some assistance. For a more immediate resolution, you can contact support over the phone at 1-800-652-2666. Our agents would be happy to help.
  1. Are you able to receive faxes using other receive modes or are you able to receive manually?
  2. When you try to receive in answering machine mode, do you get an error report or what happens when the fax comes in?

Able to receive manually, which is only one tried. When in Answering Machine mode, no error report, the fax just doesn't come in & line disconnects. As we said this has happened before & phone tech figured it out. The only time it seems to happen is when we disconnect the Canon from the telephone outlet in the wall in order to temporarily use another phone in the line. The Canon seems to reconfigure settings when plugged back in to the tel line in the wall.

Hello Stevesmari,

If you are able to manually receive the faxes, the hardware should be working. In this situation, you can try lowering the number of rings that the answering machine uses to see if the faxes start to come in again. If that does not resolve the issue, I would suggest contacting support over the phone at 1-800-652-2666. Our agents would be happy to assist and can send test faxes so they can check what might be going on when the faxes come in on your line.
