Printer MF4150 is old, double sided printing jams the paper. now i have to change it from double sided to single sided each time i start printing. Often I forget change and the paper jams and it is hard to get it out.
How do I change the settings so that single-sided printing is always set automatically?

This should be doable with print settings. e.g., try selecting "Last Used Settings" for the "Presets" option. Or, after setting Double-sided to OFF along with any other settings you'd want by default, save the current settings as a preset and use that preset going forward.
