Greetings,

The function you are asking about is called Wireless Direct.

Your printer does support this:

USB Device 2.0 Hi-Speed, 10/100 Base-T Ethernet (network), 802.11 b/g/n Wireless5, Wi-Fi Direct Connection6

The printer has a built in web server and wireless radio that allows it to broadcast its own network and "presence" similar to a Wi-Fi router or access point.

After enabling this option, you will connect your mobile device to it which will allow printing directly from your mobile device.

See page 143 in your user guide:

To connect wirelessly without using a network, you can put the printer into direct connect mode using the steps in the link found HERE. Once the printer's network has been activated, you can select it from the list of networks that appear when you click on the wifi symbol in the upper right hand corner of the computer screen.

Once it is connected, you can go into system preferences and then printers and scanners. You can click the + at the bottom of the list to open up the add printer window so you can select and add the printer.

If you have yet to install the drivers for the printer, you can download them from the link provided HERE. You would need to do that before attempting to add the printer.
