I ran across this tip that I thought I'd pass along.
Match the aperture to the number of people in your group. If you have 11 people, choose f/11.
If you have 5 people, choose f/5.
And so on.
I can't say it's foolproof, but it gets you pretty close, I think.

Not a bad idea; my rule of thumb when I was a stringer for Aetna was really about How 'deep' the 'bodies' were, e.g. 3 people deep f16, contingent upon how much of the background you want to keep in focus and what lens you're shooting with.
