I have not received a lens that I have ordered. The Fedex delivery required a signature, and the tracking claims the package was delivered and signed for by a certain DFVNBD, but the proof of delivery does include a signature or a picture.
There were a few Fedex delivery attempts when I was not home, followed by a delivery attempt on Sunday, when I stayed home all day, waiting, to later find out there was a delivery exception due to "Unable to find Street number". Then on Monday's delivery attempt, when I was not home, the package was allegedly delivered.
The Fedex customer service has been pretty much useless. The online system took three days to restate the claim that the package was delivered. They told me to contact the shipper, but I can't find a way to do that. Calling the Canon costumer service just points me back to the website that claims the package was delivered.
I am at a loss for what to do here. How does this kind of incompetence go unpunished?

FedEx has multiple divisions under their corporate umbrella and customer service is a nightmare with them because of their octopus corporate setup.
Save any documentation and you may have to get your credit card company involved if you are caught in a customer service loop. I assume you meant to say that the proof of delivery does NOT include a picture or signature.
I had a different FedEx delivery issue last year when a 90 pound but large crate shipped via the LTL (less than truckload) division of FedEx magically became a 2,300 pound package because one of the waystations along the way slapped the wrong weight tag on it causing the originator to be charged a huge shipping penalty.
Ecommerce has a lot of possibilities of failure especially when the number of companies and handlers involved increases. I wasted a couple of hours earlier this year getting a refund from ebay because of a seller using recycled tracking info purchased from the "dark web" as proof of delivery; in my case the recycled tracking was for an Amazon package delivered by UPS and even included a photo for delivery confirmation but it was the residence of someone else in the same zip code. So in addition to general incompetence in delivery systems, we have rapidly growing scams like that one on ebay. I had to go through ebay's social media account on Facebook to get that issue resolved since the corporate bot systems automatically rule that with proof of delivery, the seller isn't at fault. Brick and mortar retail is looking better!

I've been back and forth on the online versus brick and mortar question. Sometimes, I just can't find the specific product I want locally.

I know what you mean that we often have to use online for availability but problems are becoming more common now because in many cases we don't have a choice to buy locally. USPS has lost 3 packages of mine at the Indy sort center in the last 2 years and one was unfortunately a rare vintage amateur radio transmitter from the late 1940s that I had been trying to find for over a decade. I didn't really care about the other stuff they lost which was easily replaceable but I wish they wouldn't lose/trash the rare stuff! So far, FedEx has never lost or damaged anything shipped to me and they are my preferred shipping service but none of them are perfect.
FedEx provides a photo as proof of delivery on all of the items I receive and very few of them are signature required. So it is very odd that they aren't providing evidence of the signature and photo since both are captured by the delivery person using their tablet or phone. Realistically signatures are useless because anyone could sign including the driver and my case my handwriting is terrible in general and worse on an electronic device so that an earthworm or random static discharge would create a more useful signature on these devices 🙂 I wouldn't be surprised if the package was lost within FedEx or delivered to the wrong address and the driver created the signature.

I have resorted to having my FedEx packages delivered to a local drop location (a Walgreen's store). They require an ID before the turn over the package.

Good advice. I do the same with all big ticket deliveries from FedEx, UPS, etc. It doesn’t matter who. When I get a tracking number, then I change the delivery to a local pickup.

Call your CC company and get them involved. Dispute the transaction. After Canon or whomever hands the package over to the shipping outfit they no longer have any control or idea what happens to it. Most CC companies will credit your account if this can't be resolved in your favor and you can simply reorder. We live in a rural area and depend a lot (the wife! 😁) on delivery of items and 99% of the time it works as it should. But one last time something did go awry Discover handled it to our satisfaction. Just a simple call and a disputed transaction was all it took. If the package and it looks like it was delivered to the wrong place you are not going to get it back now. Call your CC company today.
