macOS support for CR3 flies from EOS R5 mark ii

I am unable to open CR3 files from my new R5 mark ii on my Macbook pro using Preview or (Mac) Photos.

My camera is using latest firmware. My computer is using latest OS (Sequoia 15.2 (24C101)). I rebooted the computer a couple of times.

"Get info" correctly reads the file type, size, other data. However, it can't give a preview and the icon has no image.

I was able to import the CR3 files into Photos, but I cannot see previews or open them for editing. I was able to export CR3 files, but not jpgs, from Photos.

I am able to open the files (including the ones exported from Photos) using Canon's Digital Photo Professional 4.

In researching the problem online, I was able to download someone else's CR3 file from an R6 - it opens ok.

I realize I am probably part of a small group that buys the R5 mark ii and uses Mac Photos for editing. My previous camera was a Canon 5D mark iv and I never had problems with this computer and workflow.

Curamantel - Did you have to follow that Pixelmator procedure for each file, or just once?

Hello, I have to do this one photo at a time. When I select multiple photos in Apple Photos, then right-click and select Edit with Pixelmator - I get an error. So, this is one by one after you get into Apple Photos Edit mode, then select the three dots and then Edit with Pixelmator.

My results using an iMac M4 desktop (Tahoe 26.3) is pretty much the same as Ricky's.

I can open and edit the CR3 file in Lightroom, Photoshop, Digital Photo Professional 4, and Topaz AI.  I can see the thumbnail in every program, including Finder, and Apple Photos, but I cannot edit in Apple Photos.

You are NOT part of a small group that buys the R5 Mk ll and uses Mac for editing.  I know more photographers that use a Mac instead of a PC.  This has to be a common problem with this camera and with the current Apple operating system, so there has to be information out there somewhere on this.

The only two suggestions I have at this point would be to go to the Apple Support Community, sign up as a member (unless you already are a member) and ask there.  The forums there are filled with a lot of very knowledgeable individuals.  The second suggestion is to call Canon's Tech Support, and ask them as well if they are aware of why this might be happening.  Be sure to mention at both places what you have learned here - including that others have tried to open your CR3 files on their Macs with the same results AND that you can open CR3 files taken with the R6 Mk ll.

At this point I really think it is a compatibility issue that Canon might need to fix in a firmware update... but who knows.  It might be an Apple issue as well.

Film Cameras: Mostly Pentax, Kodak, and Zenit... and still heavily used

I installed macOS 26.4 beta on a test machine and can now edit r5m2 CR3 files in photos. It seems like apple fixed it for the next os update.

(Beta fixes are not guaranteed to ship in the final release)

What's also really strange is my iPad that was still on 26.2.1 had the same issue. Photos does not allow me to Edit the photo. But, one thing is at least I can see the CR3 photo without it showing a red screen!

I just now updated the iPad to Dev Beta 26.4 and now I can Edit all EOS R5M2 photos, new and old!

I don't know whether to call it an Apple issue, a Canon issue, or both, but Apple made the change that broke the system. I have .CR3 images in my Mac/Apple Photos library <that I was able to edit before> but cannot edit now. In that time I've made no change to my camera (no firmware updates or other direct connections to the internet) but I have updated my computer.

My preferred editing program is Mac Photos. Now that it is broken I tried using Canon's DPP (Mac version) but I find it extremely time-consuming relative to the benefit. I finally broke down and converted my first set of .CR3 photos to DNG and started editing them. I blame Apple 80% for being slow to accept .CR3 and shortly after reneging, and Canon 20% for not coordinating a significant new software launch seemingly without coordinating with a major, necessary workflow partner needed by their customers.

I've stayed with Apple computers primarily because of my photography. When I've tried PCs for editing they've never been as good as Apple, until now.

Just waiting for MacOS 26.4 to launch officially and hoping that this is resolved. Yes, I only use Apple Photos to do everything. Until this is resolved, I may just capture RAW+JPEG on my R5M2. The DPP process is too slow and one more thing to do.
