The file input options for video are limited. Now that Canon implemented HDMI RAW so that external recorders work it would make total sense to be able to read files that have been recorded with other recorders.
I've done some tests with the ATOMOS Ninja Ultra and haven't been successful in making it work nor being able to find a combination of conversions that make the software think it's in the right format.
Being able to process ProRes RAW would be a great addition so that large projects can be tackled.
Alternatively, knowing how to convert ProRes RAW to a format that is compatible would be helpful.
A positive is that internal recording 8K50 does work. (Would love a higher frame rate for fast action).
Discovered that R5C doesn't support 8K50 via HDMI RAW - that was a (hardware) disappointment.
At the moment I only have a 256GB CFExpress card but have 1TB SSDs. The external recording option is a significant positive. It would be wonderful if EOS VR Utility supported more of these external recording formats.
On a Mac, if you are loading content from a card trying to eject is tricky because the EOS VR app must still have files opened on the external volume. You have to quit EOS VR Utility before you can eject the card. This might be a bug. A feature / work around would be to have a File menu that can close the folder.
The file list only uses the file name - there is no date embedded in R5C video eg. A001C412_24060805_CANON.MXF. The meta data is present in the associated XML. Being able to identify a file by date would be very useful for a workflow. During testing, it wasn't obvious which file was the last file recorded - sure I could click and view, but having a sensible ordering would be more efficient. Also when you click on the file name it starts to generate the parallax correction, so you have to wait if you've guessed incorrectly.
It seems that the exported file format isn't totally happy being imported directly into Final Cut Pro. Have found that Compressor 4.9 has a way to export. However, Final Cut and Compressor are limited to a maximum field of view of only 90˚. A little short of the 190˚ value defined in the specs. Still a lot of steps. Ideally Canon should have a plug-in for Final Cut to make the process of camera to edit a non-brainer.
