Wifi issue between R7 and Google Pixels

Nico95

Hello,

Since the last update, I can't use the Canon connect app with my Google Pixel 6. Bluetooth connection is OK but I can't use wifi features.

I tried to reset connection, I tried a brand new Pixel 8 and I have the same issue.

I tried with an old Xiaomi and it works.

I think that Google and their uncompromising security policy has broken the Canon wifi connexion.

If I try to connect manually, my phone says "password mismatch".

I'm sure I'm not the only one 😞

Canon, could you please make something for us please ?

Thank you!

Did you try with a Canon R6/R7 or with a R5 ?

Same issue here with Canon R7 + Pixel 7, both updated to the latest firmware. Bluetooth connection works just fine but Wi-Fi features don't.

Hi br1ce,

When you try to set up the wifi connection are you getting any error messages on the camera or the phone? If you are getting an error message what does it say word for word? Also is the connection failing at the exact same point each time, and if it is what step in the process is not going through?

Hope you don't mind me answering, I'm sure most of us would be getting the same error message.  After establishing bluetooth connection and then trying to either import images or use the app as a remote for the camera, the Canon Camera Connect app on the phone comes up with the error message "Connection failed.   Could not connect to Wi-Fi. Please wait a little while and try again". The camera itself has the message "Connecting to Wi-Fi....Please wait" which stays up for quite a while before it also displays the error message "Error Description  Err11.   Connection target not found".  The connection failure happens at the same point in the process every time.  It has been happening since the last major update to my phone (Pixel 7 Pro).  I had no problems connecting via Wi-Fi before that update.  Additionally, I have tried the Canon app on 3 Samsung devices, a phone and tablet running Android 13, and a phone running Android 14, and the Wi-Fi connects instantly on all three devices.

Hi Hazel_T,

The error users are receiving is on the CC App.  Its occurring when the request to make an image transfer from the camera to the mobile device.  So, initiating a Wi-Fi connection from Bluetooth.  I posted more about it in the illuminary group.  I have not been able to reproduce the issue, as Wi-Fi works for me 100% of the time.  (2 body's with 2 pixel devices)

Thanks ajweinert71, that's indeed the same situation

At this point, it seems it might be beneficial to reach out to phone support for one-on-one live technical support so that they can help troubleshoot the situation as it's happening. The team here at Canon USA is available Monday through Saturday at 1-800-OK-CANON (800-652-2666). If you're not in the US, you'll want to reach out to Canon in your country or region for assistance. Start HERE.

This is a widely enough reported issue on modern Canon Cameras with Google Pixel Android phones and devices, this is not a ‘niche’ situation and has been an ongoing issue for months.

There has been a lack of any updates on the Google Play store

There has been a lack of any updates from Canon anywhere.

Canon have simply left the issue hanging and left it to their users to find out through trial and error that the only way to establish a direct device-camera connection via wifi is to disable security…. Not exactly an ideal solution!

This issue should be acknowledged publicly and needs to be dealt with and not left hanging in the way it is. It’s hugely damaging for Canon’s reputation.

As I had the same issue with an Pixel 6a, I recorded a network trace using wireshark and traced down the problem.

It looks like the R7 is too slow to responde to the WPA SAE authentication request, which finally results in a race condition, as two authentication requests overlapp in time.

I've send an email to germany/cc.canon-europe.com with a detailed description of the problem.
