Looking to buy a camera but don’t have a big budget. I want to start sports photography and don’t know what camera i should get, i’m looking for something under $1,000. I am leaning toward getting a r10 becuase i have used my schools one. I already have a 24-70 ultrasonic f/2.8.

Greetings,

For clarity, can you please confirm the following.

What is the exact model of your lens? EF 24-70 f2.8.  Look at the front of the lens and read the model info for us.

If you are going to use an EF lens with a mirrorless body you will need a cannon EF to EOS R adapter.  Do not buy any other brand except Canon.

The R10 is a nice entry level mirrorless body and is within your budget.  If you'd like to save a bit more, consider buying Canon refurbished which comes with the same one-year warranty as a brand new camera.  It's not in stock now but inventory comes and goes frequently.

The lens you currently own is probably not the best suited for sports photography.  It has a fast enough aperture for indoor, outdoor and night time venues, but it's focal length and limited reach might present some challenges depending on the type of sports you're shooting.  Just some things to consider. If you have other questions please ask.

I would echo what Rick stated about the focal length and sports.  For a few events, I will use a 24-70 on one body but primarily I will be using a pair of bodies with a EF 70-200 f2.8 on one and a 300 f2.8, 400 f2.8, or 200-400 f4 with integrated 1.4X converter on the other body with the long lens choice dependent upon the sport and lighting.

When shooting sports, wider angle lenses aren't used for a lot of captures.  It has a little more "reach" on a R10 since it is APS-C (34 to 112mm full frame equivalent) but that is still well outside the range typically used for sports.  My 70-200 spends most of its time near the 200 end for the majority of sports with the wider focal length used only for those rare occasions when the action moves very close.

I shoot from the field/sidelines/court so I am very close to the action and there just isn't much I could do with a 24-70 during typical sports events so your next step is a lens with more "reach".  Pretty much everyone's most used sports lens, regardless of body brand, will be a f2.8 aperture with a focal length in the 70-200 range.  Unfortunately these are expensive even used but that should be the aspirational lens for you as a sports shooter.  At a typical event, 60 to 80 percent of my captures will be using my EF 70-200 f2.8.

The R10 is a great camera as my colleagues have said. Please follow @shadowsports recommendation stick with the Canon brand Mount adapter. Sure it maybe more expensive than a 3rd Party counterpart. But everything works as it was intended too. We hear in the forum all the time that they're using brand X 3rd Party Mount adapter and its causing issues. Like the camera locking, draining the camera battery. Or AF system, communication or aperture control issues.

Yes that is the lens i have, most of the newer rf lenses that go along with r10 are very expensive or should i opt for a ef lens instead. Aswell as where would another good place to get maybe that lens or pick up some. Thank you for the help!

We need to know the full name of the lens you have "Canon EF 24-70mm F/2.8" isn't a complete name. Canon has made multiple lenses with that name. Do you have a budget to spend for a lens if so how much we need a $$ amount. Saying "no budget", "won't break the bank" or "as high as the sky" isn't a $$ amount. For places to purchase lenses use B&H Photo, Adorama & Canon's online store. Stayaway from any online marketplaces such as Amazon Marketplace, Wal-Mart Marketplace or Facebook Marketplace. Below are some example picture are how you can find the FULL NAME of your lens.

Well, there are multiple versions of the EF 24-70 f2.8....

Besides camera body's and accessories, Canon has refurbished lenses as well.

Canon Refurbished Lenses

Another option is KEH and the used departments at B&H or Adorama.

The lens is EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens

And a budget is somewhere that is around $500

Hi Jackson,

You probably noticed that your other post was removed.  Soliciting funds for personal endeavors is against community guidelines.  Hope you understand 😉
