Sigma 150-600 Contemporary won't communicate properly with R5 and R6 since firmware upgrade

I'm using the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary with an EF-R adapter on my R5 and R6.  It worked fine, until I upgraded the camera firmware to the latest version.  Since then, I get an Error 01, "Communications between the devices is faulty.  Check the camera, lens, or mount adapter contacts".

I have tried cleaning all the contracts with isopropyl alcohol.

Has anybody encountered this problem?  Will upgrading the lens firmware solve the problem?  I would have to purchase the lens dock to do this.

I certainly think that it is worth a try.  However, Sigma have consistently said that they did not design these lenses to work with the new R-series bodies, and that they do not guarantee the results.

Mark, given that the last firmware update I have is 1.6.0, and my system still works fine, I would suggest saving the camera's current configuration to one of the Custom settings (C1-C3) and then doing a camera reset to see if that resolves the issue.  If not, you can then restore your camera back to the previous configuration.

It's in the camera manual.  That should be your first port of call for any questions about how to use the camera

Actually my first response is an internet search.  I have the manuals on my iPhone and iPad, but there are often more specific instructions online.  Such as:

Re: Can you point me to somewhere that explains how to save your configuration to the Custom Settings and putting it back?  It’s not something I’ve used before. and Actually my first response is an internet search.  I have the manuals on my iPhone and iPad, but there are often more specific instructions online.

In this case the manual clearly states how to save configuration settings, and I then wonder why you asked us to tell you where to look for the information instead of doing the search within the PDF's yourself.

Saving the settings to an SD card and then resetting the basic and custom settings seems to have worked.  I haven’t tried it in the field yet, but test shots are not getting the communication error anymore.  Reloading the settings didn’t undo the fix.

this may be a problem only with the R5 and Control Ring adapter, as the lens seems to be good on my R6 with the EF-R adapter now.  Or the Gods are done toying with me.

I purchased the Sigma USB Dock for EF lenses. And downloaded their software. It to,d me the firmware was already the latest version. However, I reset the lens to the defaults, which rewrote the firmware. It’s working with my R5 now. I’m not sure if something in the lens inadvertently got changed or the firmware was corrupted when my first EF-RF Control Ring adapter got a crack in the mounting hardware and had to be replaced. In any event, it now seems to be working, so I’ll have to try it out in the field.

Good to know that you are making progress.  I don't recall you mentioning the event that caused the crack in the adapter - that was definitely a significant factor we would take into account.

I hope your testing works out well with both.

Tried that.  No help.

If your mount adapter is not made by Canon, then your odds of having issues using it are high.

I’ve generally always used Canon’s lenses and accessories until I got the Sigma 150-600 and the 18-300 for my 80D.  Which non-Canon adapters are recommended?  They all seem to be brands I’ve never heard of, except for Neewer.

I recommend only Canon adapters, and they are the only ones that Canon supports - which does not imply they support third party lenses attached to them.  So far, I have tested about 29 Canon lenses using their adapter and had no issue.
