How can I determine the total number of shutter actuations for my 1Ds Mk III ? Does it really require getting some specialty software ?

Like the 1D mkIII you will need to send it to Canon for an accurate shutter count.

eoscount will not give an accurate shutter count for the 1D III (I tried) or the 1Ds III (I heard).

Every where I searched I got incorrect advice from everyone. Seems people like to hear themselves talk when they cannot answer factually and accurately. If you want the shutter count on a canon eos 1ds mark 3, go to this site. I got an accurate count there. http://shuttercounter.com/

Not to be argumentative (and I wouldn't dream of offering you unsolicited advice), but given the uncertainty that seems to dog this issue, how exactly do you know that the count you got from that site is accurate?

http://eoscount.com/ will work on the 1Ds Mk III. The 1Ds Mk III does not add the count to the EXIF so that is not possibile.

BTW, I wouldn't really worry about the shutter useage on a 1Ds Mk III. Canon rates it at 300,000 but I have heard of them doing 1/2 a million. A number that is not likely to be made by any non-pro shooter. This is an extremely rugged camera.
Just go out and enjoy it.

Oh I'm not the least concerned what the count actually is. However, when trying to sell the camera on amazon, many people ask for the shutter count. "They" are very concerned because they don't want to spend a few thousand dollars on a nearly depleted shutter. I guess if I were the buyer I would want to know too.

I just went to that site and they came back with a shutter count of 2,714.
I have had this camera since 2009, shoot nearly every day, some times averaging 2,400 shutter clicks per day. I have taken so many pictures it is insane.
So I think that shuttercounter.com is NOT a reliable source for a EOS 1D Mark 3
