Programmes not responding correctly on my Canon EOS 650D (Rebel T4i)

I own a canon EOS 650D or Rebel T4i. I took it for repairs because it’s flash was not firing and was told that I need to change the board for the flash so I took back the camera as I thought I may use my flashgun instead. I discovered that after the repair-person examined my camera, when I shoot on [P] (programme), camera indicates 30”. Pressing the shutter button, it clicks but the shutter remains open for those 30 seconds. This is also happening when set on [AV]. The camera only seems to operate on [A] (auto) which will focus where it deems best, on [M] (manual) and on [TV]. The only time it works correctly is when I don’t use the eye-piece but shoot photos by touching the screen. Has anyone ever experienced this situation which is very frustrating. I am not going back to the same repair person as I’m sure he disconnected something on purpose, unless he damaged my camera during inspection.

Reset the camera and see if that resolves your problem.

Tried that many times but it does not reset it back to how it was, that's the problem. I even downgraded to 1.0.3 firmware then 1.0.5 again. Even installed magic lantern, perhaps it might do something......but to no avail 😞 Now I have decided on an EOS 250D perhaps get much better results as it also records videos in 4K.

I wouldn’t recommend getting another DSLR they have been discontinued. Look into the EOS R Series Mirrorless cameras for a replacement. The most basic APS-C EOS R Series camera is the EOS R100 and the most advanced is the EOS R7. In between is the EOS R50 and EOS R10. What external flash did you purchase. Please provide the full name. The EOS 250DEOS Rebel SL3 is NOT COMPATIBLE with 3rd Party Speedlites. It only works with Canon brand Speedlites.

Greetings,

It appears you have gone through the standard troubleshooting steps provided by jrhoffman75 and received good advice from deebatman316.  Both are extremely knowledgeable.

For others that may find themselves in a similar situation.  Downgrading firmware is not supported or recommended.  This is why the procedure is not documented.  Firmware updates do not resolve hardware issues / failures.  Installing 3rd party firmware (Magic Lantern) is also not recommended.  Performing these actions can result in a bricked device.  We understand you want your camera to work, but these methods are not the way to go about it.

I believe the 650D is still under support even though it is 13 yrs old.  If you want to seek service, I would do so directly with Canon.  Based on your description, it sounds like the repairs might exceed the value of the camera.

You may want to consider upgrading as one of my colleagues suggested.  Much has changed over the last 10+ years.

Canon has excellent refurbished cameras for sale.  They come with the same 1 yr warranty as new products

Canon Refurbished Cameras

You can also check out used from KEH, B&H or Adorama

Or treat yourself and buy new.  After 13yrs I'm sure you deserve it.  😄

Once you start shooting with a more modern body, you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner.

I use the Cullmann CUlight FR60C flash unit for Canon20250321_172258.jpg

That flash unit is INCOMPATIBLE with the EOS 250DEOS Rebel SL3. This is because the hot shoe lacks the center pin on it. Therefore a Canon Speedlite must be used instead.
