EOS R6 Mark II tethering problem-- photos don't show up on my computer

AWFOTO

I am desperate. I spent a whole week trouble shooting this, I have been a long term user of Canon and EOS utilities. My husband helped me trouble shoot as well. He works on computer devices, so this is his field. He is also puzzled what is going on. But we are convinced it is a problem from the camera.

Problem:

When I connect my canon R6 M2 with TetherPro cable ( I got both USB-C - USB-C and USB-C to USB-A) , my computer sees the camera, and BOTH with Canon EOS Utility and Adobe LM ( latest version), I can launch tethering and command shutter from the computer. BUT, when I click on the shutter, no photos show up in the designated folder. I am 100% sure my settings are spot on for the softwares. Both EOS Utility and LM have exactly the same behavior. I tried different cables, different USB ports, and 3 different computers ( 6 different USB ports) and various cables, including non - TetherPro ones. Here is what is even more bizarre: Out of the 3 computers, there is one USB-C port that would work ( command shutter click and photos are showing up in the designated folder), and once the camera is plugged to this port that worked, and if I keep the camera on  and plug it to another port that didn't work at prior time, it would work now, I can see the tethered photos in the designated folder. If I then turn off the camera, and connect again to the same USB-C port, the same problem occurrs ( no photo in the designated folder). It was like this one special USB-C port would trigger the camera to work properly and stay that way as long as it stays on. Once it is turned off and back on ( like a re-set), the same behavior occurs-- I can tether control, but no phones are found any where.

What is even crazier is: I also own 2 canon 6D cameras. I can tether with TetherPro cable ( older version for 6D) to these computers with bother EOS utility and LM and exactly the same set- up works perfectly. Photos go into the designated folder. I cannot believe that my old cameras are working fine, and this newer R6M2 does not.

Based on my testing I am convinced that the problem is from the camera. I have the latest firmware on R6M2, I also re-installed the latest firmware just to be sure. There is something wrong with this camera. I bought it directly from Canon.

Has anyone experienced this?  Canon engineer, please help!!!!

AWFOTO, the Canon moderators maintain the site but do not offer tech support. I believe if one of them stops by they will suggest that you register the camera on the Canon site (if it's not already). Once that is done reach out for support @ 800-652-2666.

The tech support team is a real good group and can assist you in trouble shooting or recommend repair. It may be that the port on the camera has an issue and that is why it works intermittently.

Marc, the support was not helpful. I already tried.

The port is brand new, my camera is brand new with light use. There is no connection issue. When I plug in the cable, I get a crisp definite connection, if you know what I mean. Thank you.

Sorry to hear that tech support was a bust!

Have you attempted to uninstall the current version of EOS utility, download and refresh the application?

AWFOTO,

Just out of curiosity, and this may be more trouble than it's worth, but have you tried tethering over Wifi?

Here is a video that shows how to do that with EOS Utility, and it looks like person is using an R6 Mark II.

Ps: When you are trying to tether with wired cables, are you sure your Wifi is diabled?

In this video, we'll guide you through the process of connecting your Canon camera to the EOS Utility over Wi-Fi. Follow our easy step-by-step instructions to set up a wireless connection between your Canon camera and your computer. Perfect for remote shooting and easy photo transfers! Don't ...

Marc, yes, I uninstallled and installed EOS utility software many times, I even uninstall my Lightroom, and re-instsall one software at a time. I really tried everything!

Thank you Stevet1,

I thought about Wi-Fi tethering, but I was so discouraged, if wired option does not work, I cannot imagine wireless... no I haven't tried.

Steve, yes, I disabled Wi-Fi, I also tried with Wi-Fi active, same result.

I think there is a connection issue.  That is the basic problem, right?  I am surprised no one has asked about your computer OS and the computer itself.

What OS are you I running?  Are you using a DIY platform, on that you built yourself, instead of an off the shelf computer from a computer manufacturer?

Your comment about only one USB port working got my attention.  The recent comment about the port being new raised my suspicions.  Are you using a passive USB port expander?  They don’t work well with the cameras.  Does the one working port connect directly to your motherboard?

I should point out that the 6D and R6 Mark II use different types of USB ports.  This makes a difference!  Finally, AMD motherboards have a history of issues with their  USB ports.  More recent boards seemed to have cured the problem.

You may want to confirm Dropbox, Google Drive, etc. are not running.  Those softwares can grab control of the camera, viewing it as a really nice SD Card reader to import photos.  When that happens it can shutout tethering softwares from doing their thing.
