Hello R6 Mark II owners,

I just updated my R6 Mark II with the latest firmware eosr62-v170 ver. 1.7.0 75.77mb  that was posted yesterday 5-13-2026, and want to remind all that updating your "Canon Camera's firmware" is one of the easiest ways to to make your R6 Mark II literally a better camera overnight.  When you update your firmware, you get better autofocus, better stability, new features, bug fixes, and improved lens compatibility.  All for free.

Should you update your firmware when there is trouble with your R6 Mark II?  Yes, updating your firmware is one of the first things you should do when your canon R6 Mark II starts acting weird.

Updating firmware won't help when there's  Physical damage (Shutter, IBIS, bent pins), Dirty lens contacts, Bad SD card and Wrong settings (like Servo AF disabled).  This are user-side or hardware issues, not firmware problems.

Cheers,
Joe

And before anyone asks... when you update your firmware, the safest way to do it is download the file, then open the file, and move the XXXX.FIR file to a formatted SD card into the main directory. The only reason it's "safer" than using the app is that you will not have to worry about losing wireless or bluetooth connection during the update.

The new R8 update was released s well.

THEN...

Set your mode dial to "P", remove any lenses, and go to the yellow wrench menu and click on Firmware, and follow the on screen instructions. Be sure not to touch the camera until the update is complete. It seems most problems occur from people that did not follow these instructions.

To be honest, I didn't notice any new features. Instead, I noticed that the viewfinder simulation no longer has the ability to simulate both exposure and aperture.

Could you add some more detail on this? I use the simulation regularly and updated the firmware on my 6mkii over the weekend and have not had a chance to use the camera yet. I would miss being able to use this using this function.

In firmware version 1.6.0, the ninth item in the red menu for viewfinder (or monitor) display simulation had three real-time simulation options: Exposure + Aperture, Exposure Only, and Exposure Only When Pressing the Depth-of-Field Button. In firmware version 1.7.0, the options are now: Exposure, Exposure Only When Pressing the Depth-of-Field Button, and Off.

It was very convenient. It's completely unclear why Canon cut out such a useful feature. It eliminated the need to press the depth-of-field button. We could assign something else to the depth of field button without worrying about not being able to preview the depth.

Instead of adding something new, the manufacturer cut out something useful.

This link is for the R6mkii with version 1.7.0 firmware manual that is on Canon's website. There is a PDF version.

exactly as in the screenshot, but not as in the description.

In version 1.6.0 it was different. There was simply no "turn off" menu item.

???!!???!???  \(^_^)/

🤔

Sure there is. The screen only displays 3 items at a time, so you have to scroll down to see "Disable". I still have 1.6 and just checked. I always wait a few weeks before updating f/w... Always have 🙂
