R6 Mark II freezes when shutter button is pressed

I purchased a Canon R6 Mark II today, and out of the box it freezes when the shutter is pressed. When the shutter button is pressed it makes a sound as though a shot was taken, a red light comes on near the set button, and nothing works until the battery is removed and replaced. Press the shutter button and it happens again. The battery is fully charged and there is a card inserted. According to the manual that came with it, it should be working. Is there anything I missed or does this thing need to go back to the store?

I think you should return it to the store immediately.

After using the R6 MARK II for about 8 months I have noticed the same issue. Tested 16mm  RF and 50mm RF , the issue is annoying ! Cannot use the product .

Hi nutrimax,

I'm sorry to hear your camera is freezing and to see that other posters in the thread are having the same issue.

There are a few things to check with freezing issues. The first thing is to try loading a different memory card in the camera. Sometimes if the card is malfunctioning it can cause freezing issues. If the freezing continues the next step would be to load a different battery in the camera. Sometimes if the battery is over or under powering the camera it can cause this type of issue. If the same thing happens then we would recommend attaching a different lens. Sometimes if a lens has a short in it that can cause freezing. Swapping out each piece one at a time can help narrow down which may be the cause.

If the freezing continues happening after checking those things we would recommend sending the camera in for repair. Our cameras and lenses come with a one year manufacturer's warranty when they are either bought directly through Canon USA or are bought new through one of our authorized dealers. If you would like to see a list of our authorized dealers that is available HERE. If you send the camera in for warranty repair make sure to include a copy of the proof of purchase in the box. The technician would need that to verify the warranty.

The Canon U.S.A., Inc. online repair portal allows you to set up service in a few simple steps. I changed the lens and had no issue for about ten months. Was using it to shoot a sibling reunion it froze up completely. You would have thought the battery was removed. Tried for several minutes, changed the battery, nothing worked. Used my backup to finish. Went back to the R-6 M II and it has been working fine since. It was strange.

Warranty is almost up. I would contact Canon for a service call.

To All Who Feel They Have This Same Issue,

Do not be quick to blame the camera.  Many third party accessories cause problems.  Bad memory cards can cause the cameras to lockup. Please heed this advice.  Do not dismiss it as not being the problem, because more times than not it is the problem.

Many third party mount adapters have been known to cause R series bodies to lock up and freeze.  This is also true for the very inexpensive, EF mount lenses.  Most of these lenses are made in China ard marketed under multiple brand names.  Some of these brands even began selling RF mount versions of the lenses, most of which caused all types of camera malfunctions.

Make sure you are only using major brand, full size, UHS-II SD cards that have been formatted inside the camera prior to first use.  Only buy cards from a Canon Factory Authorized Dealer.  Online marketplaces like Amazon, eBay, Best Buy, and others are not good sources.

If you are not using wireless communications, then disable them.  Your camera could be trying to establish a connection with the smart phone that you use with it in your own pocket.

If all else fails, reset the camera back to its factory defaults.
