R6 Err 70 error - Bright Images

rswheels
Contributor

I have had my R6 since about the time it was released and have had issue with it locking up and displaying the err 70 message. I have swapped batteries, memory cards, RF-EF Mounts, and even tried a true RF lenses. I thought it might be something wrong with the IBIS because it seemed to happen more often when I was tilting the camera up. I have finally noticed a trend that I can pretty much guarantee it to lock up with the err 70 message. I mainly shoot sports but I have noticed that anytime I have an overexposed background caused by things such as Jumbotrons, real flames, or bright spotlights that the camera locks up. could this be an issue with the circuit board? any ideas? I just received my R6 Mark ii so I should be able to send my original R6 in for service if needed.

Greetings rswheels,

Thank you for the thorough description and you have performed the troubleshooting steps that we would have suggested. It may be possible that the issue could be related to the internal circuitry of the camera since you have been able to identify what time of exposure could be triggering this issue.

If possible, please check and update the EOS R6 camera's firmware to the latest version. You may click on the following link to download the latest firmware version and step by step directions are included in the download file.

In case the issue persists then the next step would be to suggest on sending the camera in to our facility for service.

Thank you for the response. I forgot to add my firmware version. I am using the most recent firmware, version 1.6.0. I will prepare to send the camera off for repair.

Thank You!

What lenses are you using. Since you mentioned sports are you using the continuous high drive mode. Only certain EF support 12 fps. The bright pictures sound like your aperture blades aren't stopping down. I would cycle through all of the apertures. While using the depth of field preview to ensure that all of your lenses' apertures are stopping down.

I am using an RF 70-200 F2.8 and still receive the err70 message. I also use a Sigma Sport 120-300 with an ef-rf adapter. I do not receive these errors with my new R6 Mark ii using the same lenses.

Does your Sigma lens on an EF Mount camera body cause an error too. Or just on your R6 OG only.

Sigma lens works fine on my 7D mark ii and on my R6 mark ii. It doesn’t matter which lens I use on my original R6 I receive the error 70 message. I just sent it off for repair so I will post a reply once I receive it back. Hopefully the repair solves the issue and if it does I will reply with the repair notes.

Sigma doesn't recommend adapting their EF lenses on RF Mount/ EOS R series cameras. You may run into compatibility issues using certain lenses.

I received an update from Canon after sending the camera off for repair. they are replacing the main PCB, CMOS Sensor. If you are having this issue do not wait for the warranty to expire like I did 😠 send it off right away or it will cost you $$$. Now, when I receive the camera back, I will update if that actually resolved the issue (It better $$$)

Good luck with your camera repair..

I suspect the issues with the Sigma to continue.  Over the years there have been exposure issues with Sigma lenses ranging from ghostly rings to overexposures.  All of the issues are traceable to the Sigma lens firmware not working properly specific camera settings.

The ghostly rings were caused by enabling Highlight Tone Priority.  When Canon introduced the R Series, there were problems with Sigma lenses overexposing by a full stop.  Sigma released firmware updates for lens models that are able to use the Sigma dock.

I suspect your 120-300mm may fall into the latter category of needing a firmware update.  I recommend contacting Sigma to see if there is an update.

Also, try disabling every in-camera noise reduction and lens correction setting you can find.
