R5 IBIS delay before 100% stabilization?

Curious if others have the same experience. If I handhold the R5 with IBIS on, and just focus on a static object, it takes around 3-5 seconds to get really good stabilization.

It looks like some stabilization prior to that, but with some floating. So I assume it's just running through an algorithm in that time to obtain the super good stabilization. It's only an issue sometimes with subjects like small birds that hop around on branches and don't sit still too long.

I tried on RF 100-500, EF 100-400, and an EF 24-70. All had similar delay until the really good lock. Thanks for any insight to your experiences with IBIS!

I can not speak for the OP, but the delay is with the IS system as a whole. I was able to reach my conclusion of a three second delay by timing the delay after half pressing the shutter using a stopwatch.

On all other platforms I've tried, image stabilization fully kicks in when you half press the shutter or use BBAF. It's instant, and you can visibly see it kick in when looking down the viewfinder.  That being said, it's also not "on" prior to that. Canon adopts the "always on" approach, but when you half press the shutter, it will take approximately three seconds for Canons IS system to fully stabilize, which again you can see while looking down the viewfinder.

Settings and shooting conditions are completely irrelevant. It happens in all conditions and settings.

Tracking is unaffected in any manner.

Thank-you for your reply .  But you have not answered the question.  What do you see that leads you to conclude that there’s a delay.

If the camera AF system is active and focused , then so is Image Stabilization.  The IBIS is not a substitute for a mechanical gimbal system.

Good luck!

I have answered the question and the OP accurately described it in the initial post. I’m literally seeing a 3 second delay in the viewfinder before IS fully settles in. No other way to put it.

You’re clearly mistaken. Otherwise the OP, myself, and users on other forums wouldn’t be experiencing this.

We are using lenses with image stabilization, so I’m not sure why you keep falling back to IBIS being the main talking point. IBIS is completely irrelevant at 400 and 500mm focal length.

Against better judgment, I will explain why I keep talking about IBIS.  The question was directed to the OP, not you. The topic of this thread is about IBIS.  If you have a different issue, then I suggest that you start a new thread.

[EDIT{
Telling me that you use a stopwatch to determine your IS isn’t working isn’t a good answer.

Good Luck!  I won’t be back.

“Against better judgement” lmfao you’re up on a high horse aren’t you?

You failed to direct the question towards anyone. Seeing as I was the last to reply, anyone with any amount of common sense would have reasonably assumed you had directed the question towards me.
