Here is the use case:
- Set camera to custom mode, say C1 that has shutter speed 1/400 configured for it.
- While in C1 shoot as usual adjusting shutter speed as need, say to 1/125
- Let camera go to sleep
- Wake the camera up
Observe shutter speed is reset to 1/400
I'd expect this not to be the case because letting camera going to sleep and waking it up is not the same (shouldn't be) as turning it off and then on.
If you enable autoupdate for the custom settings it will keep updating it with whatever you choose duting shotting but this kind of defeats the purpose of the custom mode in my opinion, where you are guaranteed to always start from the same set of settings when switch to that mode.

I have the same exact issue with my R3....if it goes to sleep, when it "wakes" up it's back at the registered custom function setting, NOT saving any adjustments I have made.
You need to enable the auto update option if you want the registered settings to be updated.

This is something that canon will never learn and it is simply unusable the way it works today. autoupdate is not what we want/need. The custom setting is like it should be as a starting point, that you know well. you come to a new location and you adapt this basic settings as required. and nobody wants to auto update as this destructs the generic settings that we have as an everyday starting setup. for example with a medium shutterspeed but today we are shooting swifts in flight and 1/8000 seems still to slow 😉 and when you take a short break waiting for the bird to come back (that happens every 10-15 minutes) so the cam goes to sleep. When the swifts come back, you miss the first shots as you again have to crank up the shutterspeed and iso(if you dont have it on auto) and open the aperture. and this each and every time the dam thing goes to spleep. Sleep is made to save power, nothing more, nothing less! it should not change any settings. If you PC or mac goes to sleep, Mr canon developer, you would kill somebody at apple or MS if everytime it returns from sleep you had to reset the right keyboard layout and screen resolution, it is logic, and normal, that a device return from sleep in exactly the same configuration it went to sleep. If this does not work that way, sleep does not work and the only quick fix is to disable sleep until the bug was fixed. But @Canon they live with that bug since years and say, "thats by design, use auto Update" NO, NO, NO, Canon, you should not reinvent the wheel(sleep mode). If I want to return quickly to my basic custom settings, I will turn the camera off/on and I will have my favorite custom settings again, if I want to change quickly for something slower in a darker picture(like the frog in the water, that comes by while the swifts are abscent). But having the cam go to sleep shouldn´t change anything when it wakes up again. sleep/wakeup is not the same as power off/on. off/on should reload defaults, sleep/wakeup MUST return to presleep state or its a BUG!!!

Custom Shooting Modes are preset camera configurations, One configuration can different AF point selection and custom controls. They are not meant to be memory slots.
Custom modes are not intended to retain your settings changes following a power down or an auto shutoff. If that is the behavior that you want, then do not use a custom mode.
If you wish to change or redefine your preset configuration, then enable auto-update, make your changes, and then disable it.

The complain we have is not in Power down but when goes to sleep. The first case it should reset configurations to custom modes. But, it should keep configurations as they are when it goes to sleep in the middle of a shooting session. If you change a configuration while taking photos of a particular subject, and if for any reason we wait some time and it goes to sleep, the moment after, when you wake up the camera, configurations are back to Custom mode settings. As explained in my case wildlife photography is made of quick decisions and waiting. If I wait too long and the camera goes to sleep, the moment that I have to quickly take the picture the camera is with another configuration.

You're exactly correct, axeira, and there seems to be a widespread consensus that Sleep functionality should not trigger a reset like powering does. For whatever reason, Canon seems completely disinterested in refining the EOS OS. There are any number of areas where they could improve it. This is only one. There seems to be a limited number of areas where they are interested in making improvements to their camera bodies and sadly, this isn't one of them.

The posters erroneously believe that the cameras have a sleep mode - they do not. There is a timed auto power off mode. The primary difference between auto power off and manually switching off is the ability to power back on without going through the startup sequence. If I am in shooting situations as described i cancel auto power off. Anytime my camera powers up I want it to be in the known programmed setup that I worked on developing. I don’t want it to be in some intermediate condition.

You make an interesting point about sleep mode, John. If it isn't a sleep mode, it should be. And if this worked like the majority wished it would, your concerns could be addressed by a simple power cycle. Best of both worlds.

They don’t seem to understand that cameras have worked this way for the better part of 20 years, at least. And that goes for all the major manufacturers.

Waddizzle, that's whole the problem. Canon (and other legacy Japanese camera manufacturers) are content to rest on their laurels and be self-satisfied. That's awful. And it's a bummer that folks like you and John, both seemingly older, retired gentlemen, are content to live within the artificial restrictions put in place decades ago instead of demanding more from Canon (and others). If the Chinese ever get a foothold in this space, they will wipe the floor with these staid old-school Japanese companies. They're already doing it in other arenas.

I suggest that you make a formal suggestion submission to Canon. I believe there’s a link on the web site homepage.
I have repeated the following advice more than once in this thread. If you want the camera to retain your settings, then simply do not use a custom mode.
You could also enable auto-update. But as the OP pointed out, that defeats the purpose of the custom shooting mode preset camera configurations.
