My only recourse is to remove the external battery.  Please advise.

"External battery"? Let me guess: It's in a 3rd-party battery grip?

No- its a canon brand battery directly in the camera - no grip. I stated external battery as opposed to removing the internal clock battery. Its the only way I can get it to turn off by removing the battery. I have also tried factory reset of all settings. No luck.

I have only read about a dropped 7D with similar problem. A camera service man needed to fix the camera.

Power on/off switch problem ?? Send it to Canon service center if resetting to factory default won't work.

Check out other discussions regarding similar problem of the othe brand camera.

Good luck.

The switch is a "soft" switch in that it mere tells the camera you want to turn it off, but does not cut power. (Normally the camera will invoke a sensor cleaning cycle it powers off.)

This may be a loose connection inside the camera, but you would need to send the camera in for service.  There won't be any reset option to correct it.
