Yes it is. Thats a lot of lens for this little camera, but it will mount and take photos. The lens will give an equivalent field of view of 112mm - 320mm. What are you planning to take pictures of?

Short answer: The SL1 is a crop-sensor DSLR. As such, it can use ANY EF or EF-S lens ever made.
That's the "compatibility" answer. "Suitability" is a whole other subject.

This is a good point. The 70-200mm f2.8L is a heavy lens. You will want to never hold the camera/lens combo by the camera. Always hold it by the lens itself. You could damage the cameras mount if you don't. Otherwise it will work beautifully and make fantastic photos as a matter of fact no other lens will match it in this lens category. It is simply the best there is.
